DS> Not worth selling if you've had it since high school
DS> and it brings back memories, but worth it if you pick it up at
 DS> a rummage sale for a quarter.
ML> What if the memories are bad ones?
DS> The bad memories are the ones that give me the opportunity to pick
DS> them up at rummage sales for a quarter. [g]

I'll give it up for a pound. Most of my academic memories are
not happy ones. Too many pretentious teachers and cutthroat
stoonts. Just plain learning I enjoyed. Even just plain
calculation. But jumping through hoops and being the envy of
all the other kids when I successfully did so, no fun at all.

DS> Heh. Check out Philip Larkin's "This Be The Verse" here:
 DS> http://tinyurl.com/27z3x

I first saw that in a collection of light verse someplace.
All too true, and a recurring theme. Mad Magazine once printed
a poem to similar effect, that ended with something like
"Put them all together and that spells M-O-T-H-E-R, the reason
I'm so [screwed] up today."

DS> I doubt I'd be famous or rich; quite frankly, I was a competent
DS> player with a decent spark who would have made a good session
DS> man, but I was no Charlie Parker.

The world needs lots of sidemen and few Charlie Parkers.
Speaking of which, I did a gig on which the guitarist was my
buddy from decades ago Mitch Seidman, who is one of the best
sidemen you could ask for. He did a couple albums, but I guess
he wasn't cut out for the solo path, with a name like that.

DS> Also, in a quantum universe with infinite realities branched at
DS> each decision, I'm playing the sax somewhere. And I'm hauling
DS> lobster traps somewhere else. And I'm pushing up daisies
 DS> somewhere. And... [g]

I'm still not sure about the infinite thing.

DS> Was the book perhaps _Tales_From_Storyland_? +/- 70 pages, many
DS> short little stories, usually brightly illustrated.
DS> Might be able to track down a copy for you.

There were two books, both with Storyland in the title.
One was green, I know, and the other was I think blue.
They were about 9x12, hardcover, without dust jackets by
the time they were handed down to me (from I think my
Uncle Peter, who is only a decade older than I am). They
were from Platt & Munk, whose colophon was in type that
even at the age of 5 to 10 I found quaint. The last story
in one of the books involved the adventures of a pea in
a pod (he gets shot from a peashooter, is all I remember),
but I believe that that was the one that didn't have
Mr. Pig Goes to Market. I have a bunch more books than I
need, but at some point in the distant future it might be
nice to revisit those stories. As the books had been
hand-me-downs, I'm pretty sure they are from an early '40s
edition.
