===========================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> that we were both within three degrees of separation from the
ML> subject of that worthy film The Departed.
 GJ> Who is, or was?
ML> Some guy named Bulger. I met his brother a few times.

I looked up that name in Grolier, and got "Bulger, Roger J", who wrote
a book on medicaL ethics; not the sort of person who I would consider
a subject for a film.

GJ> The "champagne" I tried tasted OK as a fizzy drink, as long as one was
GJ> not expecting to compare it with a wine.

ML> OK as a fizzy drink is hardly OK. And paying wine prices for
ML> grapeade doesn't strike me as exceptionally wise.

I wouldn't actually pay _money_ for such a drink! When dining out in
downtown Bandar Seri Begawan I usually drank water or any of a fine
range of pure fruit juices with my beef rendang.

GJ> Title: Roman-Style Tripe - (Trippa Alla Romana)
 GJ> 1/4 c Fresh-grated Parmigiano

ML> I'm guessing the original used all Pecorino, but that
ML> was too nasty for civilized palates. I'd use all Parm,
ML> myself, if I used cheese at all.

The last time I ate that, in Rome, several years ago, it did use
cheese of some sort. I paired it with a particularly rough and nasty
chianti, ordered out of ignorance.

 GJ> 1/4 c De-alcoholized wine; (opt)

ML> You know, it really isn't the same as heated
ML> regular wine - for one thing, the wine used is
ML> fairly nasty, as who cares about its quality,
 ML> anyway? It's "wine," innit?

As the alcohol remaining would be zero, why pay extra for de-alc?

 GJ> FROM: fooddownunder.com
GJ> MM Format by Dave Drum - 12 February 2004

ML> As I recall fooddownunder was a site that stole recipes
ML> and took away the attribution. I presume Dave got the
ML> recipe from the site before MMing it?

I recall that discussion.

-=> Glen Jamieson said to Mark Lewis <=-

GJ> According to the illustration accompanying the article, the 2 slices
GJ> of bread are quite thin, and appear to be sealed together around the
GJ> periphery, making a sauce-tight joint. By the time the outside of
GJ> this package is toasted, hopefully the inside will be neither frozen
GJ> nor at mouth-burning hotness, but "just right".

ML> Mmm. Another crime. But I note that one of our American
ML> companies has peanut-butter-jelly sandwiches built according
 ML> to the same specifications.

Is that also Heinz, perchance? Perhaps they have perfected a tasty,
edible bread glue and impermeable, thin bread slices - possibly by the
addition of a form of plastic to the bread dough. (Bon appétit!)

GJ> McDonalds have announced that in Australia their deep-frying oil has
GJ> had its 8% of trans fat reduced to less than 1%. That will remove
GJ> 425 tonnes of trans fat from Australia's food supply.

ML> I'd suggest that McDonalds might want to remove its entire
ML> self from Australia, which would do far more good than some
 ML> cosmetic getting-rid-of-the-food-bugaboo-of-the-day.

An interesting bit of politics. I read about that voluntary trans-fat
cut back by McD in my "Choice" magazine, and several weeks later the
PM announced that the government would be asking fast food sellers to
cut out trans-fats voluntarily; if they didn't, the government would
have to force them to do so.

GJ> Following Christmas, a survey was made of the uselessness or otherwise
GJ> of gadgets given as presents. The five most useless kitchen devices
GJ> were found to be, in order of decreasing uselessness:

 GJ> Electric wine chiller
 ML> useful

Not necessary when you have a fridge or an esky.

 GJ> Electric ice shaver
 ML> somewhat useful

I have had a hand one for 20 years and used it once.

 GJ> Ice cream maker
 ML> could be useful

Never made it. I can buy good stuff to eat with rum.

 GJ> Vertical grill
 ML> could be useful

Possibly. I would like to try one first.

 GJ> Hand-held milk frother
 ML> useless

Of course!

GJ> While the most useful gifts were,
 GJ> Rice cooker

 ML> could be useful

Used 3 or 4 times a week. Couldn't live without it.

 GJ> Electric pepper mill
 ML> totally useless

If I had one I would use it. I haven't, so don't.

 GJ> Benchtop mixer
 ML> useful

If I had one I would use it.

 GJ> Electric wok
ML> potentially useful, but less so

Many people here, in this Asian country, use them.

 GJ> Electric frypan
 ML> potentially useful

I bought a new one yesterday, on special for $28. Useful for
providing a flat, fairly evenly heated surface with a thermostatic
control. It will be my first new teflon-coated cooking utensil. If I
can keep the rough, brutal hands of less caring people from scraping
the surface I may be able to see what can be done with it. It came
with a tiny wooden spatula 12 cm long.
