GJ> Nothing is wasted. It is aboriginal custom for the tenderest meat to
GJ> be given to the tribal elders, who tell the young ones that they have
GJ> to eat the tough bits ("...or you will get weak and feeble like me").
ML> Ah. Clever. So the old guys have learned to scam their youths. I
ML> wonder whether senior citizens have evolved such self-preservatory
ML> techniques in all societies where they manage to survive to
ML> toothlessness (which is how old? in the bush).

In a nomadic society, arthritis probably limits survival. I doubt if
I would have survived to my present age. (No red wine.)

GJ> less prep work for me to do on a tail than what would be necessary for
GJ> ox tail. The tail has best flavour of all.

ML> See, you've been indoctrinated well.

I am not as successful in indoctrinating my young...

GJ> It might be worthwhile phoning the croc farm and asking how much a

ML> Let me know what the result is. Question regarding the things as
ML> pets. Why do they sell (or lease, or whatever) animals that have
ML> grown to a size where they can be difficult to manage instead of
ML> selling the eggs for incubation or at least hatchlings?

I did phone the Darwin Crocodile Farm, and asked if they sold eggs and
was told that it was illegal, as crocs and their eggs are still
considered to be an "endangered species". Apparently once they hatch
in an incubator this status changes. Bush aborigines could eat the
eggs, as they were part of a "traditional diet", but not more
civilised gentry. While I waited on the phone, the woman at the farm
asked around if anyone knew what croc eggs tasted like, but if they
did, no one admitted it. Then I tried another place - "Crocodylus
Park" - and spoke to Charlie, who had been an egg collector. He
hadn't eaten any, as he said he had found too many rotten ones, but
some of his associates had. When boiled, only the yolk hardens - like
a turtle egg - with the white remaining transparent and mucous-like.
The PNG natives in the Sepik river like the croc eggs very much.

GJ> seafood including 2 or 3 kinds of fish, scallops, mussels, cockles,
GJ> baby octopus, squid, and the meat ranged from chicken, to duck, lamb,
GJ> veal, beef, buffalo, crocodile, camel, emu and horse.

ML> I'd pay 10.90 for 300 g of scallops (if good), squid, duck, camel,
ML> or emu. Not sure about horse, which I've tasted only a few times.

The scallops were good, even though that form of stir frying caused
them to shrink more than I would have preferred. The horse was
surprisingly tender. The Darwin Cup races had been held the previous
week. I suspect that the restaurant had put in a bid for the horse
which came last. Cooking the croc to slightly brown, as requested,
did improve the flavour, even though the meat was somewhat toughened.

GJ> of good ice cream. It was excellent, with a nice rum bite, and a soft
GJ> chocolate overtone. The only improvement would have been if I had had
GJ> two glasses of it over the ice cream.
ML> What you might have done was to point out that there was but 20%
ML> in that formulation, and you were used to 40 to 54%, so it would
ML> be only fair to give you two glasses.

She might have taken that reasoning the other way, and removed one of
the scoops of ice cream

ML> afterward Ella Lou said that she might never go to a piano
 ML> recital again.
 GJ> And would you?
ML> No problem. I could do that every week. That level of stamina
ML> and the fact that I can readily cleanse my mind and forget
ML> everything in a few days might explain why I periodically do
ML> this sort of thing professionally.

Advantage Loo.
