I will never understand why caffeine needs to be added to things
like root beer or cream soda, which never had them originally.
What's next? Putting it in milk?  How about in baby formula:
might as well hook 'em at the nipple and save a couple of years!

I don't see sugar per se as necessarily bad, but I'm not too happy
about the prevalence of high-fructose corn syrup, the "super-sugar"
that seems to be in everything these days.

I really, really need to see a cite of that "study of the elderly."
As I said before, I want to see who paid for it.  While perhaps not 
as unbelieving as your father, I am deeply suspicious of throwaway
references to nameless studies and research paid for by special 
interest groups.

I see your soft drinks and junk food, and raise you PORTION SIZES.
Forty years ago, when I was a spawn:

 - Glass bottles of Coca-Cola and other soft drinks were 10 oz, 
   12-ounce cans were considered really big, and 16-ouncers were
   two drinks.

 - An adult meal at McDonald's was a cheeseburger, fries, and coke.
   Today that's considered a kids' "Happy Meal."  If you were really
   hungry you got a Big Mac (which today is considered small 
   compared to some of the burgers now available, like the Double
   Quarter-Pounder with Cheese.

 - "All You Can Eat" buffets were much less common.  Restaurant 
   portion sizes were realistic.

The argument lost all merit for me with this sentence.  "For
The Children" should be a subcategory of Godwin's Law. [rant]
Guess what parents? Stop palming off the responsibility of 
raising your kids to the State.  Educate the little squints
yourself, or STFU. [/rant]

Want to stop poisoning "the children"?  READ THE FOOD LABELS,
you bunch of dumbasses, and STOP BUYING THE CRAP you think is
bad for you, and stop whining to the government for protection.
No one is putting a gun to your head, demanding you eat MSG.
Start buying *ingredients* instead of all that processed dung you
put in your pie hole, cook it yourself, and hit the processors
in the wallet where it really hurts.  If you really care, that
is.

The government rides my ass about enough stuff already.
Label requirements make sure that everyone has the information 
to protect themselves from stuff they don't want to eat. Now it's
up to the individual to follow through on that information.
