If I didn't know and trust you, I would have suspected that you were
trying to put a "tall one" over me, but of course you would never take
such an advantage of an innocent Antipodean!   I am curious, however,
as to how your friend extracted such a monster from its watery habitat,
and his arm from its gullet.

From my limited experience of somewhat smaller catfish, I thought they
didn't have much in the way of teeth, but were basically suckers - also.

      Title: Octopus With Lemon And Garlic
 Categories: Spanish, Appetisers, Seafood, Tapas, A641.594
      Yield: 9 servings
 
      5 kg Octopus
    500 ml Olive oil; approx
     60 ml Lemon juice
      2    Garlic cloves; crushed
           2 TB red wine vinegar
      2 sm Fresh red chillies; chopped
      1 ts Sugar
    1/2 ts Cracked black pepper
    125 ml Olive oil; extra
    1/4 c  Chopped fresh oregano
           -leaves
 
  1. Remove head, beak and skin from the octopus.
  
  2. Press octopus firmly into medium pan; it must be a tight fit. Pour
  in enough oil to barely cover octopus.
  
  3. Cover pan with inverted lid, weigh down with a brick or can.
  Simmer, about 1 1/4 hours or until octopus is tender. Drain octopus;
  discard oil.
  
  4. Remove sinew and suckers from octopus by running hand along
  tentacles; cut octopus into 5mm slices.
  
  5. Place octopus in large bowl, pour over combined remaining
  ingredients. Cover, refrigerate 3 hours or overnight. Serves 8 to 10.
  
  Can be made a day ahead. Storage: Covered, in refrigerator. Freeze:
  Not suitable. Microwave: Not suitable.
