=============================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Fifty plus planes waiting with engines running! That is absurd.
ML> Sez you. How long does it take for Adelaide International (the
ML> busiest airport in the world, according to one drink-addled
ML> ex-vintner of our acquaintance) to see 50 flights?

Probably until Thursday. There is talk here of reducing the time of
curfew at the Adelaide airport, to fit in more flights, particularly
overseas ones.

ML> But, yes, it's true, the cause of conservation would be better
ML> served by a different system, perhaps having the planes wait
ML> at the gate with a number in hand, so one could hear "number
ML> 374, proceed alpha foxtrot to runway 35, you're number two for
ML> takeoff" or the like. Or they could wait in the penalty box
ML> with their engines off until called.

That is what I was thinking. The complication to that first suggestion
would be the queue of incoming planes waiting to use the gates. The
penalty box idea would be better.

GJ> Once, while in a queue at O'Hare I timed take-off spacings at between 1
GJ> and 2 minutes, so on that occasion you could have expected a wait of

 ML> At O'Hare, I believe it's 1 min 20, edging to 1 min 30, as I
ML> have done the same thing. At LGA, in good weather, it's I
ML> think about a minute, anyhow, less than O'Hare.

From my recent reading of an article on the certification of the A380,
the main reason for spacing out planes on take-off is to allow the
turbulent air left by one plane to dissipate before the next one enters
that air space. It has been found that the A380 causes less turbulence
and noise than a 747. Following tests in Germany, the recommendations
made to the ICAO were that heavy aircraft (over 136t) could follow it
after 2 minutes, and medium and light, after 3 minutes. (Other
interesting facts in that article were that the A380 has flown at up to
Mach 0.96, and has been stalled 256 times, including with deliberately
iced-up wings. I suppose you have read the prissy comments by the
Singapore Airlines CEO that passengers in the double bed sleeper cabins
are not allowed to get up to any noisy "mile high" activities, as it
could disturb other passengers in adjoining cabins who wished to sleep.)

ML> We've booked for Mt. Cook, where we will just wander around
ML> the village, not doing any substantial hiking, as someone's
 ML> knees don't handle the up-and-down well.

When looking over the aircraft parked at the Croydon Aircraft hangers
at Mandeville, near Gore, I noticed one of the Tiger Moths had "Mount
Cook Flightseeing" painted on the side. If you or your consort wish
to experience that form of touring you could phone their pilot, Ryan.

Title: A Good All Round Pesto
 Categories: Nz, herbs, Sauces
      Yield: 6 Servings

      2 c Fresh herbs
      2 cl Garlic, large
1/2 c Fresh grated Pamesan cheese
1/4 c Pine nuts or walnuts
    1/2 c Olive oil
           S & P, freshly ground

Combine the herbs, garlic in food processor and process to mix. Add
nuts (for smoother mix process; for chunkier mix pulse until just
chopped). With the machine running, slowly add the olive oil. Season
to taste and process to the desired consistency. Add parmesan
  cheese. Pulse or stir through.

I usually put my mix (without the cheese) into a bowl and stir the
  cheese through.

  2007.
