-> I make mistakes in concerts. Even the big guns, the symphonies,
-> the yo-yos do, a couple biggies per evening on average.
HN> See, life happens to all of us! (grin)

Speaking of which, I had a senior moment and fell down
the stairs (13 of them, unlucky). Not thinking of doing
much travel during the b'ball season, but if I knit
quicker than expected, expect a shout.

HN> being able to "let go" and continue is more of a benefit than many
 HN> would suppose!

Truer words = never spoken.

HN> I on the other hand may not have noticed any of the errors and would
HN> have thoroughly enjoyed the performance.....sometimes ignorance IS
 HN> bliss!

On this cruise thingy we took, I had heard great things about
the chamber group on board, the Rosario Strings, so I looked
forward to hearing some good music and maybe meeting some
colleagues. Alas, it was the usual collection of prostitutes
who couldn't get into a decent conservatory, playing heavily
edited versions of movie themes through an echo machine.

HN> Goes back around to Dave the Sac's alternate uni'es...I hope that in
HN> at least one of them I am playing major league ball and enjoying it!

Well, I lost one of my nine lives just over a day ago. In some
alternate universe Carol is crying ... but perhaps in another
one she's laughing (I hope not).

HN> I just looked on all the websites and picked the lowest one way fare

Studies show that the average leisure shopper checks
three websites. I have almost always found that united.com
gives me the best fares, but once in a while I have booked
on aa.com (occasionally you can get United tickets there for
cheaper than United sells them for) and orbitz.

HN> back...Alaska actually had a better deal than southwest

The success of Southwest is in its image. I noted that the
price of my ticket from Baltimore to Orlando cost more than
US Air would have charged me to go from Boston to Orlando
through Baltimore.

HN> respective classes and such! I know little or nothing about fluid
 HN> thermodynamics!

You know about the other dynamics of fluid though!

HN> I'm not sure, at one convention ( three conventions ago?) a young man
HN> came up with a carbon fiber cello, and was soundly rebuffed by many of
HN> the conventional builders of violins and violas and cellos. I thought
HN> it sounded very good but since I haven't seen any big players using
HN> one I am supposing that it did not catch on.

Luis Leguia makes carbon fiber cellos, and Sharon Robinson
plays on one. It sounds louder than a wood one, but the
consensus is that the overtones aren't there. I thought it
was okay and a godsend for a traveling musician.

  I would doubt that the
HN> ancients lucked into the ideal
HN> configuration, but many "institutions" are very resistant to changing.

See my post to Joan on this. I think that the womanly curves
of a stringed instrument just happened to provide the best
balance of tonal richness and carrying power, and if this
weren't so, the violin would have evolved in the same way as
flutes and trumpets have (that is to say quite dramatically).

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Chilled Mango Soup
 Categories: Soups, Fruits, Chinese
      Yield: 1 Servings

      4 Very ripe medium mangos
      2 c Water
      1 c Sugar
      4 Whole cloves
      4 Star anise
      1 tb Cornstarch, mixed with
      2 tb Water, or
      1 tb Small-grain tapioca
      1 c Unsweetened coconut milk
      3 tb Dark rum
      1 c Chilled white wine

        X mint sprigs for garnish

Peel and pit the mangos. Reserve the pulp of half a mango for garnish.
Puree the remaining mango pulp in a food processor, set aside. In a
heavy medium saucepan, combine the water, sugar, cloves, star anise
and cornstarch mixture or tapioca. Bring to a boil. reduce the heat to
medium-low, and simmer gently for about 15 minutes, uncovered,
stirring often, until the liquid is thick and syrupy. Add the pureed
mango, coconut milk and rum to the syrup and stir to combine. Cook
until the soup just returns to a boil, remove from the heat. Strain
the soup through a fine sieve, pressing the mango pulp through the
sieve, discard all the solids. Cook the soup. stir in the wine and
refrigerate until chilled. Dice the reserved mango for the garnish.
Pour the soup into 8-10 large red wine glasses and garnish with diced
  mango and mint sprigs.
