Yesterday a strange thing happened.  I was walking home from the
supermarket when I noticed a chook wandering along the opposite
footpath.  I don't know why the chicken crossed the road, but she did,
and joined me, and followed me home, and even wanted to come into the
house with me.  Now she is clucking by the back door.   I have fed her
brown rice (so she won't get scurvy) and dry dog food.  I suppose I
had better look for an owner - or a recipe.

      Title: Grandma's  Chicken  And  Dumplings
 Categories: Mains, Chicken, Newsgroups, May.rec
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
      1    Fat hen
  1 1/2 qt Water
           Salt
      7 tb Flour
    3/4 c  Water
        dr Yellow food coloring
 
  Cook 1 fat hen in 1 1/2 quarts water and salt.  Cook about 3 hours.
  When cool, pick meat from bones and cut into small pieces.  Thicken
  broth with 7 tablespoons flour and 3/4 cups water.  Mix with egg
  beater and season to taste.  Add a few drops of yellow food coloring.
  Strain over chicken. Reserve 4 cups of gravy in a flat pan for
  dumplings.
