RH> I've never used an electric one, just the manual.

I've not used my unit often but that's because i dont have a good spot to hook
it to. When I get home, I'll mount the base permanently in the garage and the
rest lifts off to be cleaned. The base doesnt touch the meat grinding
surfaces, so wont have to be unbolted. Has a clamp we use now but the screw
holes will be easier.

The main unit can be put in the dishwasher <g>.

RH> Brownouts? Try blackouts. They shut down power to the downtown part

Ouch! I'm hearing of heat deaths too. CNN.COM showing me what's going on out
there. They are asking us here to be careful, use the AC as needed but not to
run dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, extra lights, until after 8pm or
early enough they are finished by 8am.

RH> Maybe not, but if it's outside of the area being cooled, it doesn't ca

Well, I'd have a fire if I tried to run one outside today! Base has warnings
for folks to not leave the kerosine left over from winter use, outside. If
you have a shed, you are to open it is anything fmamible is in there, better
yet, if it's gas, load it in the car and use it up.

RH> That tells me all I need to know about Sasebo Commissary prices!
RH>

Yeah. Real sticker shock when I first got here. While not quite 'double' USA
prices, we are close to it on most things. A container of regular iodized
salt (the round cardboard ones) are 87cents here. Canned veggies are 80cents
and up for the cheaper ones. Canned soups are over a dollar for campbells.

It's the cost of transportation as commisaries run 'at cost' plus just enough
to pay the wages of the workers. Baggers make only tips (no hourly wage at
all) but make *quite a bit* as everyone knows they work for tips only. I pay
1$ per cart at least, and if walking and they stack my carryall and backpacks
for us, 1$ per cart/bag unless it's a newbie who doesnt know how to do that
yet and needs help (then I help but tip less). Still works out as 2$ or more
for 5 mins or less work.

Slight sideline on that. Packing regular bags 'USA way' is easy. Packing a
proper carry cart and backpack setup kinda is a skill one learns by carrying
such home. My favorite lady does it better than I can, carefully separating
all the big bulky stuff into Charlotte's backpack (lighter weight big bulky
stuff), the heaviest at the bottom of my pull-cart, then the rest in my
backpack. If it's a big trip, Charlotte will also have her school backpack
which she can pull behind her and I'll be careful to shop in such a way as to
not overload that one. Her's will get all the veggies and fruits then top off
perhaps with some frozen bread items. This was a regular even for a long time
after 9/11 as no cabs were allowed on base and i didnt have a car. 3 miles
home....

Yes. Very different. I learned it from childhood in Florida at friends houses
and only much later figured out how to make it. The flavor is close to the
Filipena one but without the vinigar and a bit saltier.
