(Replying, through Common Ground...)

GJ> My reasoning as to why dogs don't normally eat other dogs from the
GJ> same pack or family is that their main method of identification of
GJ> each other is by smell, and even after death this smell would linger,
GJ> thus identifying and protecting the corpse.

ML> After a while, they should get tired of old Fred lying there,
ML> especially as the other critters have started in.

That is one circumstance which I have not witnessed, so cannot comment
from personal experience on whether the other dogs would eat Fred.

GJ> Somewhere I seem to remember reading about using a sharp spike or
GJ> needle into the CNS to cause rapid death.
ML> I'd imagine that as the lengthwise knife blow would cause at
ML> least as much CNS damage, and still the thing goes walkabout,
ML> in your case the bug would continue to scrabble around, just
 ML> not so spectacularly.

ML> When the auger bored into me, apparently a huge geyser of
ML> juice erupted from the hole.

Did you thrash around, waving your arms and legs?

GJ> Yesterday I lunched at Osterio Sanso, a delightful Italian restaurant
GJ> located in the village of Kanmantoo, in the Adelaide Hills, 50 km from
GJ> Adelaide. This town is so small that it is almost unique in Australia
GJ> in that it doesn't even have a pub; only a general store/post office,
GJ> the restaurant and a 1864 town hall, and a few houses.

ML> Sounds delightful. I presume the restaurant serves as the
ML> town pub, or there are such in nearby settlements?

The restaurant does not sell booze, except with meals, but there is a
pub at Callington, a somewhat larger town 15 km away.

 ML> =

ML> Ranty question that I'm addressing to you but that could
ML> easily be addressed to others here:
ML> So why do people let spellcheckers short-circuit
ML> their brains, contributing to the downfall of
ML> civilization as we know it?:

ML> Newsweek, August 7, 2006, The Technologist: "ferris oxide."

ML> When I read this I sort of did this double-take and asked
 ML> myself, "wheely?"

Haha! Love it!
