DD> 7th Day Adventists. And what would a vegan be doing in in a dump whose

Maybe because they are with friends? Our son is vegetarian, not
vegan, but he does frequent places where meat is sold. He will also
cook meat products for others (e.g. when he was a ship's cook).

DD> Been my experience that most people "worst case" things. I'd bet (were

Which brings us back to the $ justification.

I tend to agree with a statement you made about them not needing to
*warn* people of animal content, but to make the ingredients available
if the people ask. Not every place does a good job of that.

We were once in an Indian restaurant and our son asked whether a soup
was vegetarian or not. He was told that it was. His first sip told
him that although it had no overt meat in it, it was based on chicken
broth and thus unacceptable to him. That was wrong on the part of
  the waiter.

A more recent example was at the Sam's club. Often they have little
carts handing out samples of things. One cart had a sample of some
sort of pasta which they were ladling on a gravy. A woman asked if
it was meatless and the server said yes. I had just read the label on
the gravy mix, and the first ingredient listed was beef broth. Again,
  that server was wrong.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Nativeway Bannock
 Categories: Native, Quick bread
      Yield: 4 Servings

      2 c [heaping] maize flour
1 pn Or two of salt
      1 Egg
      1 tb (heaping) baking powder
           Enough liquid to hold the
           Bannock together
    1/4 c Hot melted fat
           Optional:
1 Grated cob of field corn
           Blue-berries
           Raisins
           Black-berries
           Quartered strawberries
           Mashed, cooked squash or
           Pumpkin
           Mashed beans

I never use white or wheat flour; we never had any before the
Europeans brought it. Take two good, heaping cups of ground, sifted
maize flour, a pinch or two of salt, an egg, and a tablespoon
(heaping full, as much as will sit on it) of baking powder. Stir
together. Have your bake-oven mad hot and a tin well-greased. About
375 - 400, depending on how hot your oven runs. Add just enough
liquid to hold the bannock together, and a quarter cup of hot melted
fat or butter - you could use oil, I suppose, and pour into the pan.
Sometimes I let it sit for five minutes, no longer, before putting it
in the oven. Bake until it sounds hollow when you tap it with your
finger. and add whatever is in season. My mother used to add a grated
cob or two of field corn. You can add blue-berries, raisins,
black-berries, even quartered strawberries are good, or mashed,
cooked squash or pumpkin. My grandmother told me that when she was a
little girl they used to add mashed beans for more sustenance. It's
  good. Try it.
