Although I'm an admitted heathen, I must confess that I have
something of a weakness for nutty religious zealotry.  It's why
I'll listen to Pacific Garden Mission's radio show "Unshackled" -
an old-time radio show dramatizing spiritual redemption - every
time I stumble upon it; the corny scripts and melodramatic organ
music just reel me right in.  (Hmm.  I guess in a way, they're
having the intended effect, eh?)

The same effect got me to try Dr. Bronner's ALL-ONE Essene Soaps.
All-One!  ALL ONE OR NONE!!!  The mad ravings on the bottle were
what attracted me, but the quality of the soap keeps me buying it.

And so it was with Uncle Ray's Potato Chips.  

I was at Dollar Dreams, a local dollar store, when the bright yellow
bag caught my eye.  Near the top of the bag, a small tag that said,
"CHAPTER 32 - Story on Back." 

The back of the bag is divided into two columns.  The right-hand 
column has a picture of Uncle Ray with Mrs. Uncle Ray and their 
little ankle-biter dog; below that is a picture of the Uncle Ray
scions - average goofy-looking kids.

The left-hand column contained Chapter 32 in a story called "The
Life and Times of Uncle Ray," which as far as I can tell is a more-
or-less stream-of-consciousness sermon.  Uncle Ray talks about how
good God's been to him and his family, and reprints a thanksgiving
prayer that's been floating around teh intarnets since the invention
of email.  Wow.  Pretty cool stuff.  I had to buy them.

Gotta hand it to Uncle Ray, too, he makes a pretty good chip.  Light
and crispy, not too salty, a bit greasy but not anything like 
disgusting oily Wise Potato Chips.  Not a single burnt, blemished,
or green-tinted chip, either.  Uncle Ray's is a family owned company
based in Detroit, according to the non-religious content on the back 
of the bag so I felt OK about buying them.

Speaking of witnessing, does anyone remember Bess Eaton donut/coffee
shops in southern New England?  They were based in Westerly, RI, and 
had shops in RI, Connecticut, Western MA, and probably parts of 
eastern MA as well, seeing how the Cape snuggles up against Rhode
Island.  Starting sometime in the 70's they started to close shops
that were out of their core area (RI and the CT shoreline) so
eventually there weren't any Bess Eaton stores close to home for me.

All of their cups and napkins were printed with scripture.  I used
to get a kick out of that, too, so I always made a point of 
stopping at a Bess Eaton when I was downstate.

Bess Eaton is gone now, bought out and gobbled up by Tim Hortons, 
which explains why Hortons was able to move so quickly into the
US market.
