=====================
Hi Carol,

RH> I've got a smaller kitchen here than I had in HI (maybe about 3' x 6'
RH> open floor space) so I'm having fun figuring out what to put where. T

CS> That can be interesting, yes. The kitchen here is big and so is mine
 CS> at home in Virginia.

I was wrong; (without measuring) the open floor space is about 4x6. Had
to take some valuable space up with a trash can; the little one under
the sink wasn't cutting it. Got a nice stainless steel one with an oval
foot print so it'll look pretty anyway. I miss having a decent sized
kitchen; I think the one we had in Berlin was the biggest but it had no
dishwasher.

RH> lower cabinets all have a half shelf for the top one--bother! Upper
RH> cabinets aren't as big either and limited stwage in the utility room

CS> I like the half height shelves for some of them as it allows me to
CS> store the 'taller' items well. My garage back home could use more

I could see it on some of the cabinets but I don't want all of them that
way!

CS> work though to add storage space.

Steve cleared out some room in ours by taking boxes out for the
recycling pick up today. Made room for more boxes and, eventually, the
car & some storage shelves.

CS> On the new stove, I would hate that thing fast. Just not my style at
 CS> all.

One of my beefs with it is that pans slide all over the place if you
don't hold them down while stirring somethhing. Making sure I don't put
naything on the hot surface is another issue I've got to deal with. (G)
So far, nothing melted or otherwise damaged because we've both been good
at remembering if the light is on, the cook top is still too hot to put
anything on.

RH> until we move again. Counter top space is also more limited; I've got

CS> Yes, even here I have problems. Mostly it's the microwave. It's too
CS> big to stow away when not in use so takes up much of my working space.

We've never been able to put the microwave "away". When we got our
first one in 1984, we got a cart for it. It's been used off and on for
stowing other things as there's been room for the nuker in the kitchen
(Fort Huachuca housing had a cut out to the right of the stove in the
cabinetry; that was nice.) but on this move the plastic wheel supports
were broken so we don't know how much longer we'll keep it.

CS> Chili humm. Maybe I might make some today. Baby-crock sized load
 CS> would be nifty.

And just enough so you won't have to worry about left overs. We had
enough for a couple more meals, even without making a full pot.

CS> I just cant *live* without a crockpot though <g>. I suffer pangs of
CS> anxiety at the very thought!

RH> I can live without one if needs be. I did realise I should have kept t
RH> little one out and mailed it to myself; it would have given me more
RH> versatility in cooking in the guest housing.

Make sure you put it in the "no pack, we'll take care of" area when you
pack out next year. We mailed a bunch of stuff to us--baby crock pot
should have been one of those but wasn't. Next time!

CS> That too! What i could do without that you would probably think
CS> strange, is the collander for straining pasta. I barely use it.

OTOH, I use mine regularly (regular strainer w/holes on the bottom
only). Steve could eat pasta 7 days a week; maybe 5 days/week for me.
(G) Reminds me, I need to get meat thawed out for making meat balls
later this week.

Catch you later,
Ruth
