Ärende: And Sew On [1]
====================================================================
Hi Ruth,

> Brother is, surprisingly a decent name brand. They co-brand with Singer
> so they share a lot of features. We got Rachel one when Robert was

Yes, now they are hard to tell apart :) It wasn't that way, many years ago
though. Many of the current machine parts are interchangeable now.

> born; a couple of years later, got me the same model. That's my "go
> with" (classes, travel, loan out, etc) machine.

I like the brother a lot.. I wish singer would incorporate the thread-cassette
and auto-threading features that the brother has :) :) Singer's really stinks
(grin).. You can get it to auto-thread, but it's more work than it's worth! The
brother has a nice even stitch as well. I almost went with a brother when I
got my embroidery machine, but decided the less expensive Singer was a better
deal all around (depends on a laptop for it's 'brains' (g)).

>> she has made some neat things with it.. One was a Komono dress for a
>> costume party in Ithaca - it came our really pretty. I was impressed
>> (g). Other than that kind of thing, she doesn't really sew much.

> Both Rachel & Deborah go on fits and starts with sewing. They've never
> done anything too fancy but, at least know how to use the machine. Some
> of their friends don't even know how to sew on a button.

Yes, I hear that as well..

>> for my son and daughter, but I could do that since I only worked after
>> the kids started school pretty much.. I still made my daughter pretty
>> dresses for kindergarten, but I don't remember continuing much after
>> that, for the kids at least :)

> OTOH, I only worked part time, for a couple of years, when we were in
> Germany. I'd go to work after the girls went to school and be home
> before they got home. Sometimes it meant grabbing a quick lunch from a
> bratwurst stand but I could eat it on the bus. (G)

I bet that was so good :) Wish we had them around here (bg)

>> Oh I can just imagine that :( Good thing you were there to help!

> Agreed! I also did some cooking that David asked me to repeat before I
> went back to GA. His favorite was the meat loaf I made with sauteed
> bell peppers and onions in it. That was an experiment; when I repeated
> it for Steve, he suggested I continue to make it that way. (G)

Interesting flavors, no doubt. Were the sauteed vegetables left-over from
sausage and peppers? That would probably taste really good (g).

> I actually have been more of a garment maker over the years. I'm
> waiting on a call back now on a project.

Very neat. My sisters constantly contact me about making this or that for
them.. :) Before the puppies it wasn't a big deal.. now everytime I go in the
sewing room, I have to shoo them out! argh...

>> That's great - I bet the clothes lasted a lot longer as well.. that
>> was the thing I loved about sewing for our two ... Clothes seemed to
>> fit better and longer, and also didn't fall apart :)

> Yes, they are sturdier than store bought, especially if you serge the
> seams. And, I was able to custom fit Rachel's wedding gown as I made it
> for her. (G) She and Deborah cooked and cleaned up the kitchen some
> nights, allowing me more sewing time.

My daughter decided to wear one of my aunt's wedding dresses.. it was beautiful
on her .. I did make her wedding cake (she helped (g)), and the reception
dinner. It was an outdoor tent wedding, and thankfully the weather was nice in
Louisville (g).

>> Definitely :) Will you do appliques on the sundresses? My daughter
>> used to love those.

> I'm not sure yet; the fabric is patterned. Still thinking about it.

I'm sure it will look great regardless. I just remembered how I used to make
my daughter's clothes look "fancy" with appliques when she was little.

>> the > morning, then can take another half around lunch time if he
>> needs to
>> > stay awake in the afternoon. If he takes it after 2-ish he's awake

>> That sounds rough :( It must not be real easy for him..

> He's up late most nights with school work. Quite the challenge but he's
> doing well, overall.

I'm glad to hear that!

>> > 6-ish. Either one of those factors and it takes too long to get to
>> > sleep.

>> Yes know just what you mean there :)

> Or, sometimes I'll just shut my eyes for 5-10 minutes.

hehe.. I do that as well.. it's something that always worked for me. It was
funny because Ron never could stand doing it.

>> > Mine are packed 2 terms to one of his semesters.
>> That's a lot of work ..

> Yes, but I was talking last night with the director of my program--she
> told me that some more will be offered as week end intensives soon.
> That will allow people who work during the week & can't do the week
> night classes to take a class that goes Friday afternoon/evening and all
> day Saturday, with school work before and after that week end.

Wow.. now THAT would tire my brain out (g)

> I'll do the on line registration in a few days; then I'll know if we
> will have crazy Tuesdays this fall or not.

>> > A small gathering but a good time is anticipated. You know all
>> involved > but for Carol's husband.

>> Yep - it was so great meeting everyone :)

> Agreed there--you feel like it's a family reunion.

 Yep :)

> BTW, Steve saw a
> speidie sauce in Food Lion last night.

That's interesting :) Binghamton NY fare is spreading a bit (grin).. and
actually, I did see a cooking magazine last year with an entire section on
"spiedies" :)

Take care,
Janis
