=================================
On 10-18-04, JACK YATES said to BJöRN FORSSTRöM:

BF> Yesterday I heard Andy Roony in CBS 60 mins give a perfectly good
BF> explanaison to why the rest of the world hate USA.
BF> He said:" We don't give a <feeces> about what's going on in the rest
BF> of the world, we don't have any program that shows what's going on in
BF> any other country and we simply don't give a <poop> about news from
BF> them eiter."

JY>He's probably right, they don't, and they don't.

BF> I have asked other Americans if they know that GME(urope)
BF> are going to fire about 12,000 people here in Europe and they hadn't a
BF> Clue<tm>. Did you? I bet not. This is BIG news here but you are so
BF> full of your President election so nothing else matters.

JY>We ARE aware that GM has shut down several plants in the past year or so,
JY>Ford has done likewise, and that Chrysler is a company that, right now,
JY>Daimler-Benz wishes they didn't own. While yes, the 12,000 layoffs in Eur
JY>is news to me, a fact that I regret for I'm a glutton for knowledge, I am
JY>painfully aware that a similar number of auto-related jobs have been
JY>eliminated, some forever, here in the US. Were you aware of this?

JY>It condenses, I think to the fact that the loss of jobs in Europe has a di
JY>effect on your standard of living, but little or no effect on mine, so our
JY>progranms don't bother to tell us. It also needs to be considered that we
JY>Americans are so busy that we don't have the time or the attention span to
JY>devote to a lengthy, comprehensive newscast. Womeone wrote that the avera
JY>office worker (male) allots a total of 45 minutes a WEEK with their childr
JY>If we've sunk to that level trying to maintain a lifestyle, how could you
JY>expect us to pay attention to the business news in Europe.

JY>Sad, isn't it?

Yeah, well you two probably ain't gonna like this:

I'm not surprised that major auto companies are starting to shut down various
operations here and there.

I don't know how old you two are, but I'm old enough to remember when my
grandparents bought a new car every three years; a Desoto.

And the price of that car was well within their means (my grandfather worked
for Eastman Kodak, and my grandmother worked for Rochester Products, a
division of General Motors).

The car cost less than 35 hundred dollars to buy, including tax and license.

When I grew up and was working myself, I owned a ten year old Buick my very
first car. It cost me $50. My second car was a 1949 Cadillac, which cost me
$65. Both cars were good running, well-built automobiles, decent on gas, and
never gave me a major problem.

Now, today, the car my grandfather used to buy new every three years would
cost in the neighborhood of $40,000, without very many options.

My youngest son paid $40,000 for his first house! A car costing that much is
obscene.

And the blame lies in various places; unions, with their constant demands for
more and more, to a point of pricing themselves right out of a job, and their
jobs being shipped off to foreign countries; politicians, with their constant
meddling with stupid-assed laws that only make cars cost more and more,
taxing mid-level working people out of the new car market, and having the
fuckin' guts to vote themselves nice fat raises in the middle of the night
sessions (tell me the last time *you* got a $4000 a year pay raise, and an
increase in benefits package at the same time, overnight!).

The unions and their supporters don't see that they priced themselves out of
a job; they only complain about a president that had nothing to do with
making the policies that brought their jobs going overseas about, and get
pissed off at anyone who doesn't belong to a union but has a job anyway.

The politicians in Congress don't see that they themselves are greatly to
blame for not putting their foot down and stopping the unions from forcing
prices to go up high due to their constant demands of more and more.

Not to mention continuing to put into place smarmy little laws that only;

1. Cater to the liberal socialist idea of government being everybody's
parent.

2. Cater to the special interest groups with the big bucks to pour into
political campaings, by passing assinine laws that only benefit those special
interests, and not the consumer.

3. Allowing the oil companies to gouge the American driving public by raising
and lowering fuel prices at will, holding the American public hostage to the
whim of a couple of corporations.

Anybody who thinks that things are going to get better for America anytime in
the near future, is daydreaming.

Electing John Kerry president is *not* the answer. John Kerry, and the rest
of the 99 individuals who inhabit the U.S. Senate, spending most of their
time catering to the special interests who pump vast sums of money into their
individual political campaigns, and the rest of their time thinking up ways
to perpetuate their easy birth on the government (make that read: taxpayers)
payroll, are a very large part of the problem.

It isn't about `democrat and republican', `liberal and consrevative'. Its
about America, and whether or not there's going to even be an America in our
great-grand childrens' day. Its starting to look as though there won;t be.
