My max number of lines *was* 250. I've now reset it to 150. I
hope that's short enough.

FS>OK, while your experience may well be more varied than mine,
FS>there *is* an advantage in talking with technically-trained
FS>foreigners -- we have a common basis in that background at least

CS> There is always interest in 'talking tech' but that isnt all there is
 CS> as you know.

Of course and I wasn't talking about technical talk. Actually
much if not *most* was of a personal nature. I've always been
interested in foreigners hence always wanted to know what life
was like in their country of origin. Of course that's not like
actually being there and observing it, but it is quite
informative. Especially since, in general, I was dealing with
people who were both articulate and knowledgeable.

FS> CS> If a Japanese person in a crowd pushed you aside to get around you,
FS> CS> you'd probably think they were rude. Thats not the case though.
FS> CS> 'Hand chopping in air up and down' Summimasen (phonetic) 'please
FS> CS> excuse'. In a crowed land, this
FS> CS> is the polite behavior of one who is in a rush and never used unless
FS> CS> it's really needed (like, catching a flight and running late etc).

FS>If for some reason I were to move to Japan for an extensive visit
FS>you can be certain I'd keep fairly quiet and *very* observant.
FS>If the visit were to be open-ended, possibly for years, I'd soon
FS>start to *try* to learn the language.

CS> Same here but I am at sea so much, it's not fluent at all. I can get
CS> by well enough for all needs I have here in Japan.

That's the most important. Even "pidgin" Japanese would allow
you to get around.

FS> CS> are not, or 'less efficient' that are accepted here. Paying bills is
FS> CS> the first one that hits Americans as the system is very very
FS> CS> different. Japanese do not use checks and
FS> CS> they dont accept payments by mail for most things even if you want to
FS> CS> mail cash (which they do not do). You take the bill mailed to you to
FS> CS> the site and pay in person, in cash. A few things can be paid at

FS>That *is* unexpected. The Japanese are very advanced
FS>technologically. I'd expect them to be paying bills on the
 FS>Internet or something like that.

CS> Some can be but much can not. Automatic payments from your account
CS> are possible for some things and not others. Assumptions can be very
CS> wrong and so some things turn out easier and others less so.

FS> CS> On the upside, some things are alot easier. Kerosine
 CS> to your doorstep

FS>Hmmmmmm ... I've *never* wanted kerosene on my doorstep ... heh

CS> It's cold here and many places have only kerosine heat. Electricity
CS> is expensive here. Kerosine is fairly cheap.

Since Japan has to import 100% of its petroleum kerosene must be
subsidized to some extent to make it cheap.

FS> FS> However I'll bet I've met more foreigners who are able to
FS> FS> communicate more articulately than the average which *you* meet.

FS> CS> Which is why I have learned more at least in part.

FS>Huh? How can you learn more from one who does *not* communicate
 FS>articulately?

CS> The people you talk with know english quite well. That means in
CS> addition to learning the language, they learned much of your cultural
CS> expectations and 'rules of behavior'. You wont see the simpler 'utter
CS> confusion' with a crosscultural exchange. Non-verbal sometimes, but
CS> very informative. Hard to explain though perhaps one of the others
CS> can try. I just dont know how to say it so it will make sense to you.

I think I know exactly what you mean ... and I agree ...

FS>Each of us has different experience. Each of us is "superior" in
FS>some respect, inferior in others. As I've pointed out, I can be
FS>classified as an American Nationalist. People who do things
FS>which can harm this nation draw my attention. And that "harm"
FS>can be largely talk ... I suspect that you are so well-travelled

CS> BTW, you will have to break your messages for me. It truncated here
CS> and I have no idea what the rest may have been. My OLR at sea has size
CS> limits. I can guess the rest but best to be sure?

Sorry, but I post so many messages -- in this echo as well as in
others -- that I don't recall what followed. In any event my
messages now will have a max length of 150 lines. Will that fit?

... Captain Shenkenberger, the communicators don't work.
