Little known to others is that during week-ends I coach a junior (Saturdays)
[http://welcome.homedns.org/team.jpg] and an adult (Sundays) football (soccer)
team.
 
In the adult team there are 18-19 players of which 11 are lawyers. They get
along quite well as long as they keep away from the law in their talks. If they
do touch upon "the" subject however, then the discussions are hot/cold,
black/white, left/right ... they could not disagree more.
 
Which leads me to conclude that lawyers do not determine what the law is. In
every yet unattempted strategy they come up with an interpretation and they try
to formulate their client's case in such a manner that they hope will coincide
with the judges interpretation of the law.
 
Lawyers do not determine what the law is but the courts do. And just because a
lawyer sells you an idea, does not mean it is worth a dime. There is a reason
for all the lawyer jokes around:
 
  * Q: What do you call a cruise-ship with a 1,000 lawyers on board sinking
       without survivors?
    A: A good start.
 
  * Q: Why do sharks never attack lawyers?
    A: Professional courtessy
 
Etc...
 
Personally I do not believe there is such a thing as international copyright
lawyers. Perhaps there are lawyers specialising in international copyright, but
that's a different thing.
 
I cannot imagine myself that a US law-firm would have staff dealing with such
legal-issues abroad from an office based in the US. Most likely they will have
an associated company in the specific country to deal with it, which IMO is
logical. A US-lawyer cannot afford to keep him-/herself informed of the
intricacies of such legal matters in other countries as the time spent doing
that is unproductive ... and vice-versa.
 
Therefore I would not care to waste my money on a legal advisor whom most
likely is ill-informed and when the going gets tough will need to put someone
else in the loop anyway at the possible expense of having been dramatically
wrong in the first place.
