Hi Janis,

YEah, I might want to use my reader while I'm not connected, and i want to
follow the threads quickly and easily. That's even if I"ve got the always on
broadband, I want it local to me, with the threads I want to look at right
there, so that
if the network crumps I"ve still got what I want to look at, save or discard.
Different way of working I guess, and, as
you say, I got used to having that sort of flexibility, from my first
experiences with qwk readers on forward.

JK> ah I can understand that ..

Indeed, and saving the content I wanted for later reference
... <grrrrumble>>> major grumble.

<snip again>
JK> Specializing kind of?

INdeed, lots of specialization within amateur radio. sOme
folks dabble in two or three specializations, the fast scan
tv (like you watch on your set) guys, the digital guys, the
fm repeater maintainers/builders, the old code heads, etc.
tOns of specialization actually. That's partly why I tell
the new guys who get involved and then grumble that they
just can't retain an interest that they're not looking hard
enough. There's something for almost everybody, even if all you want to do is
push your microphone button and have
somebody to chat with <g>.

JK> Makes sense.. I can understand why it can only cover the basics.

Indeed, and as you advance in license class you get more
privileges, but you're still getting just a smattering of
knowledge in the various facets, and it's up to you to go
out and really seek the specialized knowledge that goes
along with your interests.

YEp, but there are still a few out there. IT's just keeping them motivated and
interested.

JK> hahahahaha Me too :) :) Not that I don't trust some else's
JK> judgement about what's good for technology buuuttttt.... <grin>

That's part of my thing, I don't mind surrendering myself to technology, I just
really want an understanding of it. I
recall explaining to Kathy once, because she really wanted
to understand how it is that microwaves cook her food.

JK> Yeah.. automatic shutdown failsafe-immediate-stop-bigRed-Button!

Gotta have it!!! OTherwise it's not safe. Either the
humans with free will have to be in control, or the smart
net has total control, and the fail safe. One or t'other,
but not both!!!
Ah, speaking of trek... have you read Alan D. Foster's STar
Trek? DOn't have an isbn or other numerology for you, it's
published by POcket BOoks.
Just finished it in braille.

Regards,
           Richard
