     Christmas Cookies to Die For...
     Or.. what to have on-hand while you're typing

     Gooma Mary's Crescents
     My little sister's Godmother
     1/2 pound butter
     5 Tablespoons sugar
     1 teaspoon vanilla
     1 Tablespoon water
     2 cups flour
     Pinch of salt

     Mix ingredients together, form in crescent shape.
     Bake at 325F for 5 minutes.
     Cool, and roll in confectioners sugar.
     Don't make them really big, they'll expand when baked.

     Grandma Florence's Chocolate Christmas Cookies
     4 cups flour
     1 1/4 cups sugar
     1/4 pound butter
     3/4 cup cocoa powder
     1 1/2 Tablespoons baking powder
     1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
     1/4 teaspoon orange rind
     1 cup milk
     1/2 cup raisins
     1/2 cup chopped nuts
     6 ounces chocolate chips
     A grating of freshly ground black pepper

     Mix the ingredients,  and form 2" balls.  Place the balls
     on the a greased cookie sheet 2" apart.
     Bake at 350F for 10-12 minutes.  Cool for 5 minutes, then
     allow to thoroughly cool on cookie racks.

     Grandma Florence's Italian Bows
     4 eggs
     4 teaspoons melted butter
     4 teaspoons sugar
     1/2 teaspoon salt
     3 cups flour

     Beat the eggs, butter, sugar and salt until creamy.  Add
     the flour.  Knead the dough as for macaroons.  Roll the
     dough on a table, paper thin.  Cut the dough into strips.
     Make bows of the strips, and fry in vegetable oil until
     golden.  Sprinkle with honey or sugar.
     ===

     Mom's Strufoli (Honey Balls)
     2 cups sifted flour
     1/4 teaspoon salt
     3 eggs
     1/2 teaspoon vanilla

     Strufoli Honey Mixture: [optional]
     2 cups honey
     juice and rind of 1 lemon
     1 teaspoon vanilla
     1 cup walnuts

     Put the flour in a large bowl.  Make a well in the center
     of the flour, and add the eggs one at a time, mixing
     slightly.  Add the vanilla and mix well making a soft
     dough.  Turn the dough onto a lightly floured board and
     knead.  Divide the dough in half.  Lightly roll each half
     to 1/4" thickness forming a rectangle.  Cut into strips,
     1/4" wide.  Use the palm of your hand to roll the strips to
     pencil thickness, and then cut into pieces 1/4 to 1/2 inch
     long.  Heat a deep saucepan, or deep-fryer to 365 degrees.

     Fry only as many pieces of dough as will fit without
     touching each other, uncrowded in one layer.  Fry 3-5
     minutes or until lightly browned, turning occasionally.
     Drain over the fat, and remove to absorbent paper.

     When finished frying, you may use either the Stufoli Honey
     mixture above heated over low heat, or as we do, you may
     heat 1 cup of honey over low heat.  Pour the warmed honey
     over the fried pieces.  Mound on a large serving dish in
     cone fashion, and sprinkle with colored candies.
