RS> Well, I looked into it and the only thing I can find that is
RS> "definitely not right" is your claim.

then you either don't have the messages demonstrating this or you've missed
something somewhere... to be specific, and i'm looking for the messages now,
nick andre wrote a message... his software doesn't generate MSGIDs at all...
nick boel replied to that message and nickB's reply carries a bogus REPLY
control line generated by synchronet... in fact, while looking back, i came
across one of your replies to one of nickA's posts and your's, too, carries a
bogus REPLY line generated by synchronet...

FWIW: i noticed this because the messages were not linked... my software links
messages by MSGID/REPLY... i wondered why nickA's weren't being linked so i
looked and there is no MSGID or REPLY lines in his posts... then i looked at
others' who had replied and i discovered this bug... i mentioned it at least
once to nickB... maybe twice... then i mentioned it to you and here we are ;)

RS> I can find no evidence of what you described actually ocurring, nor
RS> could I reproduce your claimed behavior. Double-checking the
RS> Synchronet source code confirms that the FTN REPLY kludge line is
RS> only created/added if the message being replied to has an FTN
 RS> MSGID:

ahhh... found nickA's to me and your reply to him... some text included to
assist in memory of or locating the message(s) in question... "pestering Scot
Dudley" made a perfect search term in my other editor i used to find them with
while i was writting this... there are several others with the same text from
nickA ;)

In Fidonet, actually, 15-20 years ago. Again, research before you rant.
Careful, I may be busy pestering Scott Dudley for source code.

The Maximus and Squish source has been publically (and legally) available
since
2002: http://sourceforge.net/projects/maximus/

Or were you talking about a different Scott Dudley?

i can continue to look for the others, too, if you wish... but the above ought
to be enough for you to find them in your message bases and take it from there
;)

FWIW: i can also dig them out of my PKTs archives... all inbound mail is
retained here for up to 30 days specifically for diagnostic purposes like this
and especially when/if someone needs/wants to see what the raw PKTs carry so as
to ensure that other software, like an editor, didn't screw something up...
