           Canada Finally Gets its Hands on Saddam's WMD

Remember those WMD that Saddam didn't have?  Well more than 550 tons of
them have been shipped to Canada.  (No I am not making this us up.)

It was a fiddle to get those non-WMD out of Iraq. They were located at
Saddam's Tuwaitha nuclear complex about 20 kilometers south of Baghdad.
The bulk of the shipment was uranium oxide, called yellow cake, that has a
low level of radioactivity.  It looks a bit like corn meal (not Polenta or
Grits).

It is the feed stock for nuclear reactor fuel or for uranium bombs.

Saddam did not have commercial nuclear reactors. The most common way to
refine yellow cake is to gasify it and spin the gas in a centrifuge.  This
enables the extraction of only one type of uranium that weighs a specific
amount, called uranium-235. Saddam had the scientists, the plans, and the
technical expertise necessary to re-start his centrifuge program at any
time.  He also had plans and designs to make uranium-235 into bombs, as
well as nuclear missile designs.

I suppose the MSM thinks Saddam was going to use the yellow cake for
pillow stuffing.

A series of secret diplomatic and military initiatives were needed to get
the yellow-cake and other materials out of Iraq.   Officials were
concerned these WMD would be stolen by terrorists.

Consideration was given to shipping the yellow cake overland to Kuwait's
port on the Persian Gulf.  However this would have traveled through the
Iraqi Shia heartland, within easy range of terrorists.  After that a ship
would have had to pass through the Persian Gulf and the Straits of Hormuz.

Finally an arrangement was made to get the materials to Canada.

At Tuwaitha, U.S.-led personnel transferred the yellow cake from old
barrels into about 3,500 secure barrels.  Then in April 2008 trucks moved
the barrels from Tuwaitha to the Baghdad international airport.  In May
they were taken in 37 flights to Diego Garcia. In June an American ship
took them to Montreal, to be transferred to Port Hope, Ontario.

Cameco, the Canadian company which bought the shipment from Iraq says the
yellow cake will be processed at facilities at the Cameco refinery in Port
Hope, Ontario for use in energy-producing reactors.  Cameco said, "We are
pleased ... that we have taken [the yellow cake] from a volatile region
into a stable area to produce clean electricity." In a nice paradox, some
of the electricity produced will probably be exported to the US.

Other dangerous materials were also removed from Tuwaitha and shipped to
Canada.  Four controlled radiation exposure devices were recovered. These
irradiation units were originally designed to safely decontaminate food
and other items. They were manufactured by Ottawa-based MDS Nordion, and
will be returned to them.  Such units are lead shielded, but they contain
highly radioactive materials that could have been used for weapons.

Presumably Saddam was going to use them for facials.  They would exfoliate
very well.

These reports don't mention an additional quantity of highly enriched
uranium that was found at Tuwaitha.  With further centrifuge refinement it
could have been used to make one or two nuclear bombs. The last I heard,
US military had control of it, but I don't know what they did with it.

The saga of Saddam's non-WMD is not over yet.  It will take Iraq years to
clean up the remaining radioactive debris at Tuwaitha and other sites.

Some nuclear WMD were probably shipped to Syria before Saddam fell.
