Dupe checking. If your msgs are sent via 22/222 to an NAB link, such as
Ross and they're sent from 22/222 through 280/5555 to the Z3 node where
Janis gets some Z2 mail, dupe checking will delete one of your messages.

That isn't filtering, that is eliminating dupes from entering the network.

Yeup. Ross and/or the other NAB nodes don't see your messages coming via
Z3, so they pass it onto Janis for distribution from her system to her
downlinks. If it's a dupe of a message received from 3:712/848, it will be
removed from further distribution as a dupe. This all depends on which
message arrives first at her system...obviously she isn't getting mail
from 'dawnunda' as often as she's getting it from the NAB link to 22/222.
