Hello Roy,

On Sunday August 05 2012 05:00, you wrote to me:

Ah, I missd that this was a special to replace that particular fixture on a
vintage car. Yes, of course, if he is the only supplier, he can vitually ask
what he wants.

MvdV>> Fifteen years ago I mounted a third brake light on my Volvo

 MvdV>> less that EUR 10,-

RW> The strip of LEDs I used was under $3...

One can buy LED strips at hat price here too. But they are not bright enough to
replace a classice 21W bulb.

MvdV>> There have been problems with retrofitting leds on relatively
MvdV>> new cars because the on board computer saw the led replacement
MvdV>> as a broken bulb. Similar problems have been encountered with
 MvdV>> led lights on trailers.

RW> I'll keep that in mind when I get around to re-doing the lights on my
 RW> trailer.

I don't find it worth while to replace the lights on my trailer with LEDs. I
very seldom use it at night and those bulbs will last forever. Plus that I
still have a box full of bulbs, that will probably last me until I am too old
to drive.

RW>>> I think I've seen a headlight that was surrounded by white LEDs,
RW>>> not sure which car that was on...

 MvdV>> Like this: http://tinyurl.com/c9lz5pn

RW> Ahhh, another link that FF12 won't show...it'll have to wait until I
RW> can view it on my laptop...

And? Have you seen it by now?

RW>>> Speaking of headlights. I have a pair of what the seller called
RW>>> 'Paris driving lights'...they have a small blue bulb in them
RW>>> that one is supposedly to use when driving in Paris
 RW>>> (France)...dunno if that's true or not.

 MvdV>> It is not true.

 RW> Probably not.

MvdV>> The general rue has always been that when driving in one's own
MvdV>> car on a visit, one may drive it anywhere in Europe when it is
MvdV>> road worthy in one's own country.

RW> So they'd be legal to use on an American car in Europe...

It would be legal for you to drive that car in Europe if it is your own car and
you were visiting. I am not sure if it would be legal to actually USE those
lights. Maybe you'd get awat with it if you can't switch them off. Or if they
can not be switched off when the headlights are on and local law requires you
to have the headlights on. Some countries only reauire headlights after sunset,
others - like Sweden - require either headlights or daylight driving lights
when driving during the day.

MvdV>> The rare exceptions relate to the UK and Ireland where they
MvdV>> drive on the wrong side of the road. When I go to the UK or
MvdV>> Ireland I have to do something about the asymetric headlights.
MvdV>> But I need not shift the rear fog light to the right.

RW> The only criteria here for rear lights is that they be visible at a
RW> certain distance to the rear. No such thing as a fog light that I'm
 RW> aware of.

Rear fog lights have bene required for quite some time now. Well over a decade.
Oddly enough one is required to have them, but there is no requierement to ever
USE them.

MvdV>> I have seen those blue lights. They are illegal, but enforcing
MvdV>> it seems to have no priority.

RW> It is illegal to drive without any lights after dusk here.

Same her.

RW> And it is recommended that one use headlights,

here it is a requirement. Driving with city lights was banned over half a
century ago.

RW> since it is illegal to drive with parking lights only. Thus, blue
RW> lights wouldn't be exceptable. We also have what is termed as 'blue
RW> dot' tail lights, which are illegal to use, but they don't enforce
 RW> that either.

Here they would however prevent a vehicle from passing the periodic inspection.
Some people replace the light before submitting it for he inspection and then
put the illegal lights back afterwards.

MvdV>> No idea why they are called Paris Driving Lights. Maybe it is a
MvdV>> reference to Paris Hilton? ;-)

RW> Could be a reference to Paris, CA, Paris, TX, etc...

Who knows...

Cheers, Michiel
