Ärende: Location field
======================
 MvdV>> ,37,Circle_Of_Protection_BBS,Bergen,Torbjorn_Mohn,47-55961259,9
 MvdV>> 60 0,V32B,

MvdV>> Go two lines up and there it is:

ml> go two lines up in what? the nodelist, sure...

MvdV> Of course. We were discussing how the location is represted in
 MvdV> the nodeist weren't we?

no... we were discussing the lack of a complete location in the location field
when looking at it with any tool... a ssyop's editor is one such tool...
nodelist lookup doors on a bbs are another... and let's not forget that many
bbs packages offer this capability when entering or replying to a message as
well...

ml> but what about in your editor?

 MvdV> What about it?

IN your editor? doesn't it provide a nodelist lookup capability?

ml> tht option isn't there in all editors...

MvdV> What option? In ALL editors? Are you sure about it?

yes... i have my own editor that doesn't offer nodelist lookups... may folk use
qedit as their editor and it definitely doesn't offer lookups... the reader
might, though...

ml> the ones i use do have the ability to display the nodelist data for
ml> the originating system of the message currently being read

MvdV> I vaguley recall that Golded can do that too. I don't know the
MvdV> key combination, I never use it. I never feel the need to know
MvdV> where someone exactly is when answering messages. Hmmm let me
MvdV> consult the on-line help... yes it is there: F10 and shift F10.

ok... and so if you look up an entry that way, can you "go up two lines" to see
the host or region entry or no?

ml> but that's it... there is nothing else...

MvdV> Tough luck. My Golded allows me to scroll though the entire
MvdV> nodelist. 1:3634/0 is two lines above 1:3634/12. But it does not
MvdV> really tell me more then I already know. I know that you are in
MvdV> the USA. The location field of your nodelist entries all say:
 MvdV> Central NC USA.

yes... so what if i did like you do over there and simply put "central" as my
location?

MvdV> This may come as a shock to you, but to the vast majority of the
MvdV> Fidonet community, this is meaningless. The two letter codes for
MvdV> states are not used in the rest of the world. My guess is that
MvdV> "NC" stands for North Carolina. But it is just a guess. To be
MvdV> sure I need additional information that can not be gleened from
MvdV> the nodelist. Plus of course that even if my guess is correct.
MvdV> "Central" is rather vague. Actually I'd say that the information
MvdV> in your location field is pretty useless.

it is intended to be rather vague but it also points to the general vicinity of
my physical location... my location is physically "an hour from everywhere" and
"in the middle of no where"... all the large cities are an hour away in most
any direction i go...

MvdV> Anyway, this started with "which net covers Montana?". Any
MvdV> nodelist lookup function in a message editor is useless for that.

that depends on the capabilities of the lookup offer in the reader/editor...

MvdV> One has to start a text editor or some other utility that can do
MvdV> seacrches for a specific string in the nodelist.

in your limited experience i guess...

 MvdV>> Host,211,Norway_West,Bergen,Torbjorn_Mohn,47-55961259,9600,V32B
 MvdV>> ,V 42B

ml>> a POTS only node doesn't have access to uncle google...
 MvdV> ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

MvdV>> 1) A POTS node has a phone book. he can see by the country code
MvdV>> of the phone number what the country or province is.

ml> there's no country code on an ION listing, michiel <SIGH>

MvdV> True, but this comment was about POTS nodes wasn't it?

yes... how is a POTS only node supposed to look at an ION node's entry and see
a country code??? don't make such blanket statements and you won't look such
the fool...

MvdV> Stop changing the subjest all the time.

i'm not... you are not keeping up and you are definitely not thinking about
other situations outside your limited experience...

MvdV>> 2) We still have ISP's that provide dial up access. So a POTS
MvdV>> only ssyetem CAN have Google.

ml> and what good is that going to do for unsighted members?

MvdV> Sorry mate, but it was YOU that threw Google into the discussion:

number one, i'm not your mate... number two, there is a perfectly good reason
why i used google as an example but that could also have been bing or yahoo...
have you figured it out yet?

ml>> a POTS only node doesn't have access to uncle google...

MvdV> Why did you do that if you thought it was no good to begin with?

if i thought what "was no good to begin with"? i'm making a point that you
obviously don't see, haven't thought about, and evidently haven't
comprehended...

ml> many unsighted folk are still limited to text only environments and
ml> that means that a LOT of stuff on the internet is simply not available
 ml> to them...

MvdV> So... they just have to consult the nodelist do they? Back to
MvdV> square one. You'r changing the subject again...

how do you consult the nodelist if you are on the other end of a POTS line
dialed up into a bbs? come on, michiel... you are going in circles and i'm not
changing the subject... it has always been the same but it involves more than
just one item or two... you have to look at the broad spectrum but wait... do
you even know what that is? :(
