Define "entertainment industry" please?
 
First of all, it is completely ridiculous one needs "an industry" in order "to
be entertained". Kids these days hardly play anymore, they need to be
entertained. When I was young we whacked a rainworm out of the ground, tied it
to some length of yarn, tied a wooden matchstick to it as a floater and ripped
a branch off of a tree and used it as a fishing pole. Now they need the virtual
fishing-app on their electronic gizmo for which they can buy electronic fish in
the online app-store.
 
If you talk about movies, music, plays books ...
 
* About all great classical music comes from this side of the Atlantic
  You get credit for Grofé's 'Grand Canyon Suite' and Berstein's "West Side
  Story"
* All great rock bands with the exception of the Eagles and the Beegees are
  from this side of the Atlantic. We can even set-up a discussion which was
  the most influential/powerful: the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Queen or
  ABBA ... all European
* The greatest composer of the 20th and 21st century (so far) is Andrew Lloyd
  Webber ... British, but I'll give you credit for Leonard Bernstein once
  more.
* JRR Tolkien, C.S.Lewis, Aldous Huxley, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simonne de
  Beauvoir, Antoine de St.Exupery, Andre Malraux, JK Rowling are authors of
  the greatest literrary works with "Harry Potter" being "the" top-selling
  book in the US ... all European authors ... (I hate Harry Potter BTW)
* Let's go into painting ... Americans will run to Amsterdam to visit the
  Van Gogh Museum. More than 70% of all visitors of the Louvre in Paris going
  there to see the "Mona Lisa" are ... American. All the Expressionists are
  European. Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dijck and all their contemporaries are
  European and never matched by anything American ...
 
I can go on about architecture, artisanal industries, lace making and so many
others ...
 
All that is also part of the "entertainment industry" I would say, whereas you
probably are limited to made for TV sitcoms with ... here you have it ...
canned laughter. Or maybe some formats that are controled by 4 or 5 companies.
 
If you want to know, I do not need to be entertained because there's so much
interesting stuff going that other than the news broadcxasts I as good as never
watch TV.
 
Better believe me ... a lot of the stuff on TV "made in USA" is crap ... so is
the stuff they make here. I've travelled significant portions of the world and
entertainment crap is universal.
 
That doesn't mean I cannot enjoy a good movie ... Forrest Gump, The Shawshank
Redemption, Saving Private Ryan, The Notebook, Dan in real life, Serendepity
(OK, chick flick) to name just these I can watch any time of the day again.

there were British. It was broadcast to more screens in the US than in Europe.
