Ärende: Australia vs. Oceania
=============================
15 Apr 16 01:47, you wrote to Earl Croasmun:

EC>> Oceania, and this had already been cleared up several days ago, is a
EC>> more general term for a general region of the Pacific.

BF> That what I thought too.

hahahaha...

BF> So why do you insist on adding non-aussie countries into Australia?
BF> There is nothing but Australia included into Australia. How hard can
 BF> that be to fathom?

there is a difference between countries and contients... australia is both...
what contiental model do you subscribe to? there are several and none are right
or wrong...

EC>> There is also a continent called Australia. It includes Australia,
EC>> Tasmania, New Guinea, and Seram.

BF> Yeah. Really? Get real mate...

yes, you should...

http://www.mapsofworld.com/continents/

The World Continent map shows seven continents, but there are other models that
show six continents, five continents, or four continents, created by
considering certain continents one entity rather than two entities.
[...]
Division of Continents
The Isthmus of Suez connects the continents of Asia and Africa, the Isthmus of
Panama joins North and South America. Comparing to the area of landmasses that
these isthmuses join, both of those are quite narrow.

No isthmus or sea separates Asia from Europe, which explains reasoning behind
the concept of Eurasia, that is Europe and Asia as a single continent. This is
one of the six-continent models of the world. This view, held by some
geographers, is generally only popular in Russia, some Eastern European
countries and Japan.

The continents of North America and South America are usually considered
separate continents, though earlier in history, they were viewed as single
continents and were known collectively as America. Even today, some countries
in South America consider the two to be one continent.

Another theory relating to the division of continents came as the
four-continent model. In this model, continents are defined as discrete
landmasses. According to the theory Asia, Europe and Africa form a single
continent called Afro-Eurasia, and the total number of continents becomes four:
Afro-Eurasia, America, Antarctica, and Australia.
[...]
Australia
It is the smallest continents in the world. According to one theory, the
continent Australia only includes the Australian mainland, not the nearby
islands like New Guinea or Tasmania. However, another theory says, those
islands have to be included into the continent as they share the same
geological landmass.

http://www.whatarethe7continents.com/

The continent of Australia includes the mainland of the country Australia and
the island regions of New Guinea, Tasmania, and Seram. During ice ages, when
much of the world's water was frozen in glaciers, the Australian mainland was
connected by land bridges to these islands. Australia is the smallest of the 7
continents but is home to the sixth largest country which is known by the same
name, Australia. The continent gets its name from the latin word 'australis'
which translates to mean southern. As a result of the continent's geography and
size, it is often referred to as an "island" continent. Australia is surrounded
by two oceans. The Indian ocean is found on the western side and the pacific
ocean is found on the eastern side.

How many Continents are there in the world?

- 5 continents
We have been taught in school (way back in the 60's in Europe) that there are
five continents, Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe, for instance
symbolized in the five rings of the Olympic Games.

- 6 continents
However, there is no standard definition for the number of continents. In
Europe, many students are taught about six continents, where North and South
America is combined to form a single America.
These six continents are Africa, America, Antarctica, Asia, Australia/Oceania,
and Europe.

- 7 continents
By most standards, there are a maximum of seven continents - Africa,
Antarctica, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Europe, North America, and South America.
Many geographers and scientists now refer to six continents, where Europe and
Asia are combined (because they're one solid landmass).
These six continents are then Africa, Antarctica, Australia/Oceania, Eurasia,
North America, and South America.
