Ärende: Running a BBS
=====================
RB> And as already mentioned, I think this difference is probably due
RB> to the fact that even local calls are metered here (in Germany, and
RB> if I understood Michiel correctly, in the Netherlands as well).
RB> Although that's changed in recent years, with flat rates for all
RB> calls inside Germany, this used to be the system for many years,
RB> and put a premium on online time. Nobody stayed online to a BBS any
RB> longer than necessary, and the same reason forced development of
 RB> good point programs.

agreed to a point ;)

RB> OLRs were never very big here, although I know it was possible to
RB> get mail for them in a short online visit to a BBS since I did that
RB> myself, but the advantages in bypassing the login to a BBS and the
RB> menus to get your mail were presumably the reason why points here
RB> were always so popular - the login and menu-hopping also took
RB> online time that was not necessary with a point program.

scripts whizz thru those prompts in only a few seconds... not much less time
than a mailer handshake... unless the sysop was always fiddling around and
changing the prompts and ordering... the real time taken was in the wait for
the bundle to be created... this is done automatically by the tosser for nodes
and points... ok, so maybe a minute or two saved but how much cost was that in
real terms? $10 a year possibly? $20? folk throw that away daily and have been
for a long time...

RB> That would be my personal explanation for the different development
RB> of fido in Z1 and Z2. I think the fact that things have more or
RB> less stayed the way they were in the past (even though local calls
RB> are meanwhile also free in most phone rates in Germany, too) is
RB> just a matter of habit and a lack of interest in changing a running
RB> system. Why should you change your system if it works well under
RB> your conditions, and the same applies to a point here using, for
RB> example, Crosspoint as his program?

exactly...
