Hello Everybody,

In the world of Fidonet, most echo moderators have a real names only
rule.  However, not everybody has a real name.  Or rather, the name
they use is not their real name.  Which makes it impossible for them
to use their real name.

The US is a land of immigrants.  People from all over the world
choose to resettle in the US, making it their new permanent home.
They have a real name before they arrive, but when they get here
they are interviewed by an immigrations officer, who asks them a
what name they would like.  Not what their real name is, but what
name they would like.  Whatever name the immigrant decides to tell
the immigrations officer then becomes his/her legal name.

I am not making any of this up.  I couldn't if I tried.  My mind
is warped, but not that warped.  At least not yet.

Since nobody knows what anybody's real name is, then why do echo
moderators insist on having a real names only rule?  It makes no
sense.  No sense at all.

If I decide to emigrate to a country in Europe, would any name
I choose to give an immigrations officer become my legal name in
that country (and everywhere else)?

I could choose to be Thor in Sweden, and Giovanni in Italy, and
Marco in Spain, and Ivan in Russia, and so on.  And then there are
countries in Africa I could go to.  And in Asia.  Oh what fun I
could have with a Chinese or Japanese name.  But I might have to
stay out of Mongolia.  I hear Mongolians only have one name.
Not three names as one, but one single-word name that is totally
unpronouncable.  Probably best written with an X.

So here's the deal.  All participants in Fidonet must adhere
to the real names only rule.  But the real names only rule does
not mean the name a participant chooses to use must be his/her
legal name.

That is the only thing that makes sense.
