I had actually misquoted the extension. It's NTDETECT.COM and is found in
the root directory, even on my XP desktop. (haven't bothered to look for
it on my Vista lap top) The NTDETECT file on my W2k laptop is 34.724k and
has a date of 5-8-04, also a hidden system file as is the 'ntldr' hidden
system file on the laptop. And so are the BOOTSECT.DOS and MSDOS.SYS
files...all pretty consistent with being part of the system files.

It is a Read Only, System, Hidden file and the one in my XP root directory
is 47.564k and dated 4-13-2008, which coincides with the same date of
the other hidden file, 'NTLDR' with no extension...

To see these files, you can use Windows Explorer and turn on the view
hidden files or do as I did and install ZTREE, a windows version of XTREE.

I can't remember ever being without XTREE or ZTREE while owning a PC,
and that goes back to the mid 1980s...

You should have used a wildcard extension for your google search. Its out
there and there are also 'how to fix' blogs and websites that will help
you fix a Windows 'won't boot' error.

Wiki says that; "ntdetect.com is a component of Microsoft Windows NT-based
operating systems that operate on the x86 architecture. It is used during
the Windows NT startup process, and is responsible for detecting basic
hardware that will be required to start the operating system. Though it
has the .COM extension, it is not actually a DOS application"

ml> it) and removing it from the system startup...

Do that and the system won't boot for sure. See above.

That computer had been behind a firewall and an invisible router for
years. The only ports that are open are the ones necessary to carry out
normal business over the internet. Not even my Vista laptop knows about it
and it is connected to the same router via wifi...one of these days I'll
have to configure a lan so they can communicate with each other.
