ml>> mc (midnight commander, a norton command clone) is a popular tool,

RB> Only a pity it isn't closer to the Total Commander.

total commander is also a norton commander clone...

RB> I never could get warm with the mc - too little power and too much
RB> work to deal with it unless you've taken a course beforehand.

hunh? i can't say that at all... F3 to view a file... pretty much any file...
and if all external utils that would normally be used manually are also
installed, even in zips, gz, tarballs and more...

RB> And I _hate_ these "man" pages with little or no real information
RB> on them - you usually need someone to interpret them for you to
RB> get any good out of them.

man pages are no more than manual pages... the pages you'd find in the
manual... they are just formatted for use with the man tool... if you have
problems with man pages, you'll also have problems with the docs where those
pages are all stuffed into one file...

RW> I wouldn't trust Norton with doing anything with my computers.

RB> Maybe not Norton, but the NC was a good piece of work and the
RB> clones are all over the place.

i agree there! mc for OS/2 leaves a lot to be desired by fc2 (file commander)
seems to work alright for my needs... at least as far as looking inside files
and possibly editing them...

RB> I use the Total Commander under Windows and abother clone
 RB> (FileCommander/2 = FC/2) under OS/2. They make the system
RB> transparent enough so that even I know what's going on.

i don't even mess with them on winwhatever... until list.com stops working, i
can see and edit pretty much everything i need there, too ;)

RW> I was in too much of a hurry to get XP working the way I wanted it and
RW> overlooked a check box that said, intall Norton antivirus yes/no...

RB> That, on the other hand, is a catastrophe. The proper answer is:
 RB> "No, for God's sake!!"

true... and there's a tool out there that will completely remove 99% of the
unwanted fluff on newly purchased or factory re-imaged machines like dell,
gateway, toshiba and others...

RW> ...had I paid attention it woulddn't have been installed. I'll have to
RW> go back and remove it when I get XP and other software and hardware
RW> working the way I want it.

RB> Good luck, as removing it completely is a real job involving manual
RB> work on the registry. I've had to do this a couple of times, and
RB> it's no fun. The deinstallation routine simply does NOT deinstall
RB> everything, and leaves a lot of junk in the system.

that's why you use the provided tools... norton and mcafee<sp?> provide such
tools on their site(s) and there are others, as well...

RW> Microsoft's version of malware and antivirus software works so much
RW> better.

RB> Not sure what you mean here. All I'm familiar with is the firewall,
RB> which is good, but antivirus software von MS would be something new
RB> for me. I prefer Kaspersky, but eveyone has a favorite of their
 RB> own.

m$ purchased one a while back... i think they call it security essentials
now... it may not be as complete as others out there but it does work... i
definitely stay away from those security suite things that have it all built
into one package... firewall, anti-virus, anti-malware, active monitoring and
protection, email, news and web page scanning and all the rest...
