Thank you for this bit of knowledge. If this would have been explained in this
manner in the first place, it wouldn't have turned into yet another stupid
thread here.

You've talked to those two before, haven't you? They're stubborn (the
developers, not the people involved in this conversation! - added so that my
text doesn't come off as an insult to the wrong people).

Agreed. But even if it wouldn't have revitalized this hobby, the old-schoolers
would still be here bickering about something else. :)

Most likely.. as well as NNTP.

I looked into it a bit with Thunderbird, and it seems that the number before
the echo isn't designating the message number, as sometimes it even has letters
in it. I think it's a reference for threading, to be honest. I opened an NNTP
message in Thunderbird, and my header there said "Reference:
xxxxxxx.fidonews@1:154/10" so I clicked on it and it took me back to the
original message of the thread. Though even Thunderbird had the correct reply
addresses in the "From:" field, including the posters name and fidonet number.
So I still can't say anything is really "wrong" with it, but I can say it might
not be as backwards compatible as some people would like it to be.

Maybe a little too high-tech for Fidonet here in 2012, eh? :)
