Had I googled the event, I would have realized the mistake.

Computers did exist in 1972. An individual couldn't afford to have one,
but I began working with mainframes and CNC machines about that time. CNC
controlled machines were just beginning to populate machine shops then.

The only counter measure that can be devised already exists. Put all of
the electronics in a Faraday shield (metal box)...

Don't forget that it will also need an extra generator or alternator, a
non-electronic distributor and an extra starter and a battery. You might
as well include a dc-ac converter and some tools so that you can open up a
petrol/gasoline pump and provide the actual pump with (in your case)
220vac, 1ph.
