Plan for AO-51 Kid's Day on June 17

AMSAT News Service Bulletin 155.01
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
June 11, 2006
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-155.01

Mike, KE4AZN, Amsat VP-Operations, and Echo Command Station says
AMSAT-NA, the AO-51 Command Team, and the AO-51 Operations Team will
sponsor Kid's Day on AO-51 on June 17, 2006.

The event is open to all kids, worldwide. We ask all amateur radio
stations to give this short time window to promote satellite operations
with kids, by actually showing a kid how to make contacts via AO-51,
providing a station to contact, or stepping aside to allow others to
make contacts with the kids.

During the event, please limit contacts to stations that are operating
with kids at the microphone. This should allow the kids to have a nice
QSO and pass some information. Kids can tell their name, age, who is
helping them operate on AO-51, where they live, and other information
about themselves.

AO-51 will be configured in the following mode during the event. Please
note we will use the normal AO-51 uplink frequency for the event with
the PL tone will be turned ON.

Uplink: 145.920 mhz FM voice 67 Hz PL Tone
Downlink: 435.300 mhz FM voice

The digital transponder on 435.150 will be turned off during the event.

See http://www.arrl.org/FandES/ead/kd-rules.html on the ARRL website for
more Kids Day information.

information]

ARISS In Crossband Repeater Mode for Field Day

AMSAT News Service Bulletin 155.02
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
June 11, 2006
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-155.02

The ARISS Phase 2 station will be configured in crossband repeater
mode--437.800 MHz up/145.800 MHz down, but it's being requested that
**ONLY** low-power (QRP) Earth stations access the system. The
definition of a QRP station for this activation will be the same
criteria that AMSAT is using for its QRP operations on ECHO (AO-51) for
Field Day.

AO-51 ECHO/ISS LOW POWER STATION (QRP) REQUIREMENTS:
To attempt to keep this simple a low power station will be defined as a
station which can deliver no more than 10 watts to a vertical or
handheld antenna. Some examples of Low Power Stations:

1. Using an HT (barefoot, no amplifier) with 10 watts or less output
into any type of vertical whip antenna (rubber duck, etc) or handheld
beam antenna (arrow type).

2. Using a mobile station with 10 watts or less output into car mounted
mobile whip antenna(s).

3. Using a base station at 10 watts output into a vertical Omni
directional antenna on the side of the house.

Examples that are **NOT** Low Power Stations:
1. Any type of high gain beam antenna, KLM, M2, Cushcraft, etc.

2. Any station transmitting over 10 watts into any type of antenna.

The crossband repeater should be activated Thursday, June 22 (late in
the crew day) so ground operators can have a chance to practice with
their QRP setups and learn how best to deal with the Doppler on the
uplink. It will be deactivated on Monday as required for the docking of
the Progress cargo supply ship.

If Jeff Williams (KD5TVQ) and/or Pavel Vinogradov (RV3BS) do get a
chance to talk on the radio, they will be using the crossband repeater
mode and will be giving "NA1SS, 1 Alpha, ISS" or "RS0ISS, 1Alpha, ISS"
respectively.

REMINDER - Contacts through the ISS crossband repeater count as a
satellite contact for Field Day bonus points, but contacts with the crew
do not count for Field Day satellite bonus points.

1. Salt Brook Elementary School Contact - Rescheduled

Salt Brook Elementary School in New Providence, New Jersey was scheduled
for an ARISS contact on Wednesday, May 31. The school experienced
technical difficulties and the contact did not take place. The
rescheduled contact for Monday, June 5 at 13:53 UTC was successful.

2. ARRL Article on Virgilio Contact

ARRL ran a web story about the Virgilio Primary School contact in
Mestre, Italy.
To view "Italian Primary Schoolers Get Front Row Seat to Space," go to:
http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2006/05/31/100/?nc=1

3. ARRL Covers Award Ceremony

ARRL ran an article covering the award ceremony held at Space Center
Houston where Bill McArthur, KC5ACR, received his Worked All States
award. "ISS Astronaut Honored for Working all States, Inspiring Others
from Space" may be found at:
http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2006/06/01/103/?nc=1

4. ARISS Receives Group Achievement Award

In a ceremony held at Johnson Space Center, the Amateur Radio on the
International Space Station team was presented with a JSC Group
Achievement Award for the support provided during the Expedition 12
mission, which resulted in a record number of ARISS contacts performed.
ISS Ham Payload Integration Manager, Kenneth Ransom, N5VHO, accepted the
award on behalf of the team.

5. Expedition 13 Invited to Participate in Field Day 2006

Expedition 13 crew members have been invited to participate in ARRL's
Field Day 2006 to be held over the June 24-25 weekend. Passes over the
U.S. may not be ideal for contacting the ISS, but it has been suggested
to place the radio in crossband repeat mode and make it available for
the QRP (low-power operating) community as defined by AMSAT guidelines.

6. NASA Features ARISS Contacts

NASA ran a story covering Bill McArthur's numerous ARISS contacts during
Expedition 12, the support he received from the ARISS team and
especially from ISS Ham Project Engineer Kenneth Ransom, N5VHO. The
article, entitled, "Hamming It Up: Space to Kids Radio," may be found
