 MvdV> repeater PI3PYR from (I think) 1983 to 1995. I often had the
 MvdV> following conversation;

<snip>

MvdV> qsl card. We could go to a simplex frequency if you like..
 MvdV> PA0XYZ: Eh.. I am working with a 2 Watt handheld in a rubber
MvdV> duck, I can't make a direct contact with you.

MvdV> made a contact with my station and you are unable to.
 MvdV> PA0XYZ: But.. but.. but....
 MvdV> Pa0MMV: Sorry, no card from PA0MMV....
MvdV> However... It so happens that I am the caretaker of the repeater,

MvdV> PI3PYR. On the card you will find info for making donations...

MvdV> Some times that resulted in a donation. Some times not...

I think I would have done the same thing.....there are several repeaters here
that I no longer monitor....there is so much echolink stuff that you don't hear
much local communications.

TL> Sounds fascinating....were all the participants hams?

MvdV> Of course. They had to be. Here in The Netherlands (and most
MvdV> other European countries) third party traffic is a no-no. License
MvdV> conditions do not allow it, with a very few exceptions. JOTA
MvdV> operations being one of them.

MvdV> The "no third party traffic" is one of the reasons why "Fido over
MvdV> Ham radio" was a closed alley here.

Makes sense....I guess. Here we have great latitude, and it allows hams to get
good PR and provide public services.

MvdV> channel? Not by using an advanced type of modem but by *skipping*
MvdV> the modem. I just fed the bit stream directly into the modulator
MvdV> of the TX end retrieved them directly from the discrimator of the
MvdV> RX. skipping all the audio circuits. In fact the TX and RX
MvdV> themselves had become an FSK modem. Mark 144.610, space 144.615.
 MvdV> Worked like a charm. ;-)

MvdV> I still do not understand why no one followed up on that
MvdV> principle and everyone is still using "modems" that plug into the
MvdV> mike input of the TX and and phone output of the RX...

Interesting idea...I don't think I've ever heard of it before....

TL> Did I recall that you no longer get on HF?

MvdV> That is right. I have not been active on HF for quit a while now.
MvdV> I still want to get that antenna up again, but somehow I never
MvdV> get around to it. Something else with higher priority always pops
 MvdV> up.

Yes....I've been down that route, but now that I dropped a hunk of money on a
new HF rig, I really can no longer put off the antenna issue. I have quite a
bit of information on limited space, easy to erect, etc. antenna at
www.zerobeat.net/g3ycc/

Yep....
MvdV> In three weeks we will hook up the trailer and head for Bad
MvdV> Bentheim, Germany. Big HAM fest. Only missed it once in all those
 MvdV> years.

I recall some of your previous posts about the ham fest(s). Sounds
interesting....I don't go to many hamfests here....there is usually a conflict
between them and some music events...and the music wins out.
