Museum Ships Weekend Special Event Station KK5W June 5, 2010

The Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club (BVARC) will be participating in =

the Museum Ships Weekend event on June 5-6, 2010 from Pelican Island =

(IOTA NA-143) near Galveston, Texas. BVARC plans a full 2-day operation =

and will very likely be the only group in Museum Ships Weekend working =

OSCAR satellites. =

It is expected that amateur radio operators will activate amateur radio =

stations on over 70 ships worldwide during the event. The BVARC opera-
tion from Seawolf Park will activate both the submarine USS Cavalla and =

the destroyer escort USS Stewart.

The planned operation on OSCAR satellites will take place on Saturday, =

June 5, 2010 on the 1550 UTC and 1731 UTC passes of SO-50, and on the =

1931 UTC pass of AO-27. The call sign will be the BVARC club station =

KK5W. QSL with SASE to KK5W, Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club, PO BOX =

2997, Sugar Land, TX 77487-2997.

The Museum Ships Team has more information on their website:

On June 3rd, 2010, the Launch of Mars500 mission will begin in Moscow.
 =

The first full-duration simulation of a human mission to Mars is about =

to begin. =

After closing the hatch, the crew of six will remain in their =91spacecraft=
=92 =

for 520 days.

The 520-day simulated mission to Mars will start on 3 June, when the =

isolation facility is sealed and the international crew start their =

record-breaking experiment. =

The crew will basically live and work like astronauts on the International =

Space Station, with maintenance work, scientific experiments and daily =

exercise. They will follow a seven-day week, with two days off, except =

when special and emergency situations are simulated. =

Ed. Note: Now here is an example of plenty of free time for the Astronauts.
A 2.4ghz Txmitter and a 1.2ghz RXcvr would go great to occupy their time.
Maybe
Even a spacewalk to put up 2 umbrella type antennas to communicate back to
Earth. =

(They could use some short whips or small beams on 2 and 435 for the Earth
Bound
simulation even talking through AO-51)

There are six crewmembers plus a Russian backup: ESA-selected Diego Urbina =

(Italian/Colombian, age 27) and Romain Charles (French, 31); =

Sukhrob Kamolov (32), Alexey Sitev (38), Alexandr Smoleevskiy (33) =

and Mikhail Sinelnikov (37) from Russia; and Wang Yue (26) from China. =

Housed in Russia=92s Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP) in Moscow, =

the 550 m=B3 sealed space mockup includes an interplanetary spaceship, =

a Mars lander and a martian landscape. =

1.	School Contacts

The Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia =

was scheduled for an Amateur Radio contact with the International Space =

Station (ARISS) on Saturday, May 29 at 10:43 UTC via ON4ISS in Belgium. =

The WIA will held a special dinner to celebrate its centenary and has
invited =

students from local schools in Canberra to make an ARISS school contact =

on that evening. It is anticipated that this dinner will be a high key =

event with Australia wide coverage.

Istituto Comprensivo Camaiore - Scuola Secondaria 1=B0 Grado =93M. Rosi,=94 =

Camaiore, Italy has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the =

International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, June 5 at 10:21
UTC. =

Students participating in the contact have learned about space science, =

principles of radio communications and the benefits of space =

exploration and have prepared to use English in a real life situation.

2.	ARISS Contact for Pita Kallak School

An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held

between Pita Kallak School in Kuujjuaq, Quebec, Canada and on-orbit
astronaut =

Timothy Creamer, KC5WKI on Thursday, May 20. Telebridge station ON4ISS in =

Belgium provided the connection. Some technical difficulties were
encountered, =

but nine questions were answered during the session. In preparation for =

the contact, students learned about the ISS and amateur radio through video,

the internet and guest speakers and created science related projects in the =

classroom. =

3.	ARISSat Presentation Available for Viewing

Gould Smith, WA4SXM gave a presentation on ARISSat-1 at the Dayton
Hamvention, =

held over the May 14-16 weekend. His presentation has been posted to =

YouTube. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DVEDfSCw6VcU

4.	ARRL QST Covers ARISS =

The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) June QST carried an article by Steve
Ford,
WB8IMY titled, "Ground Control to Major Tom." The story was about ARISS =

and making general contacts with the ISS crew members. It started off with =

how ARISS is mainly to enhance youth STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering =

and Math) education, but that all amateur radio operators can have an ARISS =

contact. It talked about the types of contacts and included a picture of =

astronaut Mike Fincke. Then it talked about Richard Garriott and his SSTV =

(Slow Scan Television). The ARRL monthly journal has a circulation of
150,000.

5.	Astronaut Training Status

Astronaut Don Pettit, KD5MDT had a productive ham radio training session =

review on May 19. He expects to be active with the amateur radio system =

while on the ISS and is currently assigned to Expedition 30.

6.	ARISS Presented at Scout-O-Rama

=93Scout-O-Rama=94 was held over the May 15 weekend in Wheaton, Illinois. =

ARISS Mentor John Spasojevich set up an exhibit about amateur radio and =

ARISS at this event.
