This is a reminder of the call for papers for the 2010 AMSAT Space
Symposium and Annual Meeting to be held October 8 - 10 at the
Chicago/Elk Grove Holiday Inn which is near O'Hare Airport.
The Symposium Committee invites proposals for:
+ Papers for publication in the Proceedings
+ Symposium Presentations
+ Poster Presentations
+ Equipment and Operating Demonstrations
These can be on any topic of interest to the amateur satellite
community. We request a tentative title of your presentation as
soon as possible, with final copy submitted by September 1, 2010
for inclusion in the printed proceedings.
Abstracts and papers should be sent to JoAnne Maenpaa, K9JKM at
k9jkm@comcast.net.

AMSAT Director Contests and Awards Bruce Paige, KK5DO reminds everyone
who participated in the AMSAT Field Day that you need to email your
results to him. Per the rules....
The Satellite Summary Sheet, available on-line at:
http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/awards/amsatfd.php should be used for
submission of the AMSAT Field Day competition. It must be received by
KK5DO (email or postal mail) by 11:59 P.M. CDT, Monday, July 12, 2010.
The preferred method for submitting your log is via e-mail to:
kk5do@amsat.org or kk5do@arrl.net.
You will receive an email back (within one or two days) from Bruce when
he receives your email submission. If you do not receive a confirmation
message, try sending it again or send it to Bruce's other email address.
Tim, N3TL noted, "I've never heard AO-7 so busy. I heard more stations
on AO-7 than I've heard in the two years I've been working the satellites
and I stayed in the CW portion of the passband! If CW was that busy, I
suspect the SSB going on above 145.950 was even busier." Tim used an
FT-817ND as the transmit radio, and a Yaesu VR-500 handheld all-mode
receiver as the receive radio connected to an Elk antenna with a Diamond
diplexer. In addition to hand-holding the Elk and manually tracking AO-7,
Tim said he tuned for Doppler manually and used a straight key for CW.
His goal was to show that effective satellite communications doesn't
require significant expense and many satellites can be worked with the
equipment you already own.
Patrick, WD9EWK/VA7EWK, operated from the Garland Prairie Vista picnic
ground in the Kaibab National Forest 20 miles/32km west of Flagstaff AZ,
along old US-66 in grid DM45ag. Patrick reported, "For AMSAT Field Day,
14 QSOs on 6 satellites - 6 on AO-7, 4 on FO-29, and one each on the
other 4 (AO-27, AO-51, SO-50, VO-52). All done on battery power with a
pair of 12V/20Ah jumpstart battery packs, 5W transmitter power, without
generators or running off my truck's electrical system."
Andy W5ACM, wrote "Everything worked right this year for the Houston
MosQRPitos, operating as W5MSQ near Brookshire, Texas. We were set up
for all possible satellite configurations including Mode S down via
AO-51. It was great to find AO-7 and FO-29 in good shape and fantastic
ops via HO-68. It may have only been one pass at the end of the event,
but it was a GOOD one. Thanks to all for the many satellite QSO's."
George, KA3HSW, Satellite op for W9CCU said, "We managed 21 contacts in
all ... one on each FM bird and the remainder on the linear sats.I was
very impressed at how well AO-7 held up. AO-51 V/S was a treat, and
some observers couldn't believe how strong the downlink was with just
a corner reflector on the K5GNA downconverter. Nice to have SO-67
back, too!"
A report received from Andrew KE5GDB says, "Field day was quite amazing
down here in Houston too. I was one of the operators for K5HOU. I had
never heard SO-50 with so many people!"
Bob W7LRD, reported, "We had an absolute blast on field day. AO-7 sounded
like a 20M pile up. Even the S band operation on AO-51 was busy. With so
many stations on the satellites should we not have more AMSAT members?"

Saturday, July 10 for the Great South Bay ARC Special Event, "A Celebra-
tion of Amateur Radio" This special event will take place at The Custer
Institute, Long Island's Oldest Public Observatory. Pete, WB2OQQ will be
"Satellite Active" from 9 AM to 3 PM for FM and Linear Satellite passes.
At 3:45 - 4:45 Pete will give a talk on "A History of Amateur Satellites,
and how to communicate thru them". A special QSL card will be available,

Final Shuttle Launch Dates Announced

The July 2 UniverseToday.com newsletter reports that NASA announced new
target dates for the final two (and maybe three) shuttle missions. STS-133
is now aiming for November 1, 2010 at approximately 4:33 p.m. EDT for the
final flight of shuttle Discovery, and for STS-134, February 26, 2011 at
around 4:19 p.m. EST for shuttle Endeavour's last launch. The potential
bonus mission STS-135, would launch sometime in August 2011, if approved
by Congress and NASA. The latest word on that was that NASA officials
hope the decision would be made sometime this month.

1. Upcoming School Contacts
Cavett Kids Foundation=92s Camp Cavett, based out of OU Medical Center in
Kingston, Oklahoma, has been scheduled for an =
Amateur Radio on the International
Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, July 8 at 20:35 UTC. The mission=
of
the Cavett Kids Foundation is to provide a forum of support through various
camps, events, and programs for children with life-threatening and chronic
illnesses while promoting character, coping skills, and connection. Using =
ARRL
(American Radio Relay League) lesson plans, children will be introduced to =
the
basics of radio wave propagation. Local radio clubs will assist with
demonstrations and hands on activities.
2. Japanese Club Talks to ISS via ARISS Contact
On Wednesday, June 23, Asahi Manabiya, a volunteer club in Owariasahi, Japa=
n,
took part in a direct Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARI=
SS)
contact. Approximately 145 people attended the event and watched as the you=
th
asked 23 questions of Expedition 23/24 astronaut Tracy Caldwell-Dyson, KF5D=
BF.
This contact was a featured activity used by the club to pique children=92s
interest in natural science. The event drew media attention and was covere=
d by
one radio station, two television stations and a newspaper.

4. ARISSat Safety Review to be Held
The Johnson Space Center Payload Safety Review Panel will perform a flight
safety review of ARISSat-1 on the mornings of Wednesday and Thursday, June =

July 1 in Houston. Participation in the review will include U.S. and Russi=

ARISSat team members as well as RSC-Energia safety specialists.
