Hey James!

You were asking about udev and mounting drives.  As of today I just booted up
my new development system for purely console type activities - no xorg, no hal,
no dbus - and am not using udev to set anything other than to ensure the
framebuffer stuff has the correct symlinks and premissions (group video) as
well as the audio group and permissions for alsa. My user maurice wants access
to that stuff.

I have two sata drives wired into the first and second sata ports off the
motherboard and are non-swappable on the fly.  The onboard sata is Intel ICH9. 
I have a pcie card with two sata ports for hotswapping. It's specs are as
follows;

I was thinking about using the above pci address to marry into the udev scheme
so that any drives I hotswap would automagically get the desired settings upon
insertion but as of the last bootup I haven't bothered and am using the old
fashioned {,u}mount method.  I am not sure what advantage there would be to
having udev automagically doing it for me as of this writing but have been
pondering the idea for quite some time.

The last hotswap was to install a more fully bloated MinimaLinux - xorg, hal,
dbus, python, etc. - onto a 2.5" sata laptop drive targetting an Intel Atom
motherboard.  Worked like a charm for that evil, demented purpose.  My
neighbour uses it when he drops by for coffee and is sufficiently impressed,
especially considering the low cast of such a unit.  Myself I was more
impressed that my Xeon guy could successfully develop and install everything
without much tweaking.  All on the fly too!
