Ärende: don't fence me in

Right. Let the blood be let, *then* Slack releases, *then* I'll pick up on
it. <chuckle> A plugin was "required" on a page here, where there was
one HIGHLY buried document I *just* found on where to stick the dammed
.so(d). What a PITA! If I want to use more than firefox with the page, I
have to put another cp of it into the respective plugin directories on the
other browsers... ... ...

Eye candie:
Those can be turned off, but the same happens on a work site. "*Look* like
your doing more than you should, and you can take longer to do it."

I *know* you'll hate me for it, but as *if* that is about to stop me (:
Ubuntu went into two rigs here, and it *is* nice to have those frilly bits
just work, but I still would rather setup an ftp server without that sudo
dance that Ubuntu seems to dictate. Besides, there's only an unofficial
64-bit version. Maybe their 32-bit "server" flavor allows a root login. I
wonder if inittab is still in 'em to coerse 'em?

Update since I drafted the above RE: 64-bit:
Ubuntu (three different flavours) were crammed into two old SMP Xeons and
a laptop here. For the media work, I *have* to be team Ubuntu. *You* might
get a Linux f/Scratch on a CL to jump through these hoops, but idjiats like
me appreciate "out of the box". It's bloatware, it's frilly, but it *is*
fast to upgrade and utilize.

Or a backup plan. <G+cower>

We'll see what kinda SAN rolls into here in the next week, and if the pig
is going to be workable without M$.

PS: 2G fibres cable just arrived in mail. One shelf full of FC drives, and
one switch ready for "smoke test". <holding breath>

JB> Sure could make for a sweet firewall!

MK> Or just for network management.

The plan was - if the bandwidth is sufficient to handle the I-net traffic
- to segment out the two Gigabit controllers, and keep one server dedicated
as a firewall. I'm sure I'm not the first to think about using it this way,
so we'll see what the evil I-net has to say about the matter.

Sorry for the spurious quoting. It's a good thing in retrospect, as it took
me so long to get back to this.

... Black holes are big attractions.
