Ärende: More on Sprint DSL?
===========================
Thanks Peter ..

 PK> What ADSL line did you connect it to? If the same line
 PK> as the other ADSL device then its likely its connection died...

I never got it to 'see' the ADSL. 200 feet away through the building I don't
know how I'm 'fed' to the ADSL. With the Z324 up and connected to a CAT5 line,
the Z324 in COMM port admin and OS/2 reports the Z324 does see packet traffic
from whatever is involved with the so-called ADSL modem.

 PK> So I take that to mean the Zyxel WAN interface is configured
 PK> correctly, but the Ethernet side is not right somewhere.

Yep. In theory, for PPPoE and what was TOLD was a straight connection to a NEW
Sprint ADSL modem, before I drove 110 miles to set this up. At first I thought
I was to connect this way before the nightmare showed up!

 PK> What model of Cisco is it? A Cisco Switch is a layer 2 device and
 PK> unless specifically configured not to, is totally DHCP transparent.

I don't know. It's hard strapped to the Linksys and to the shelf! I couldn't
move it to see where the cables went and read the labels! The gent who set it
up did NOT want it fooled with. As I got to learn.

 PK> Ok, so DHCP from the Zyxel works, but DHCP via the Cisco
 PK> doesnt? That means the DHCP server is not givng out Leases
 PK> for some reason, or the PATH from the DHCP Server to the OS/2
 PK> Client is being controlled in some way.

Yep.

 PK> ADSL Router with DHCP Server
 PK>          ||
 PK>         Cisco Switch
 PK>          ||    ||
 PK> || ++==== DHCP to local machines that work fine.
 PK>          ||
 PK>          ++========== DHCP to your OS/2 machine that doesn't.

Dunno. I couldn't get the gent who set this up at the facility or on the phone
to tell me what he did. I believe with the exception of the above DCHP
connection to my OS/2 box the above is OK. But I have no idea how he is trying
to serve my OS/2 box. All I see is packets back and forth from the Z324 to
something in the above with the COM port admin Z324 monitor.

 PK> Then something is being done that is preventing the DHCP
 PK> requests getting to the ADSl Router or its replies from getting
 PK> OR you didn't actually get a CONNECT to the Cisco Switch.

Yep. Thus one of the questions. I've never contemplated this. But is a
broadband Z324 router capable of a WAN connection behind the Cisco Switch from
a Linksys ADSL router and thence to the furnished Sprint ADSL modem?

I use the Z3## series for cable modem use with the Internet protocol. But it is
supposed to work with what Sprint uses for an ADSL modem using PPPoE instead of
IP settings.

 PK> If DHCP works for OS/2 from an ADSL Router directly connected, then
 PK> this should also work via another Etherswitch PROVIDED there is no
 PK> specific configuration in there blocking the DHCP traffic.

Dunno. Supposedly the Z324 connects through a cable to the MODEM, whether it
be an ADSL or CABLE modem. Address service comes as fixed or DHCP from domain
service on the IP side, primary and secondary. Then it supplies private
network DHCP 192.168.1.33-256 addresses on its LAN side.

 PK> .. DHCP should be transparent to a Cisco Switch.

Yes as I understand this. But does that mean it can ride behind yet another
ROUTER such as a Linksys router, between it and the MODEM and get yet another
layer of DCHP service there too?

 PK> HOWEVER you ned to be aware that -
 PK> 1. It is possible to configure a Cisco Switch Port
 PK> to ignore and drop DHCP traffic.
 PK> 2. If the Cisco Device is NOT just a simpoe Layer 2
 PK> Etherswitch but a layer 3 Router, then yes, things may
 PK> be required to get DHCP traffic to pass.

New worlds for Mikey Puppy.

 PK> If you could provide a diagram like above WITH Cisco Model
 PK> numbers, and IP Segment addressing info ...

At some point, I will be with the gent who set this up. When I huddle with him
and your training, I will report back.

             *********** Break to subject #2 *************

 PK> If you are only talking to OS/2 boxes on this ONE
 PK> ethernet segment, then remove NETBIOS over TCP/IP and
 PK> you are secure for that segment and NETBIOS.

Not enabled for any purpose. No WIN box access needed.

 PK> Also ensure you do NOT Route beteen interfaces (IPGATE OFF).
 PK> Of course if the 2nd NIC only has NETBIOS and no TCP/IP
 PK> at all, then routing is non-existant anyway...

Only ONE box in the in-house LAN is intended for IP service. I tried the above
and that failed. LAN0 had NETBIOS for OS/2 and TCP/IP on it and the Z324. It
had DHCP configured, could see the Z324, was assigned 192.168.1.33. The SECOND
NIC had to be fixed address. I tried only NETBIOS for OS/2 on it.
 Hooked it to the internal OS/2-only PEER LAN.

 PK> preserve the existing IP addressing for the OS2 boxes, but also
 PK> allow them to access the Router on a different Network address?

Nope. Only that ONE box gets IP awareness, The internal LAN doesn't.

 PK> Making a box Dual homed (2 x NIC's), is one way, but I can see
 PK> better ways. Without full docs its hard to see what is being
 PK> attempted and what is able to be changed.

 PK> This sounds like you have 2 x Netbios Domains defined
 PK> and you are trying to give them the same Name. Remove
 PK> NETBIOS from one of the NIC's, unless you need it on
 PK> both sides, in which case you have an issue.

I tried that. But MPTN won't let me use any NIC without at least NETBIOS for
OS/2! I can't set a NIC up here without at least that.

 PK> See above, if you dont need NETBIOS on a NIC, then remove it.

This may be the problem then, With my TCP/IP 4.3 and MCP2 and so on, the
configuration panel tells me I have to use at least NETBIOS for OS/2 for each
NIC. And when I go to log on as a user, even though I haven't logged on
anywhere, the log on tells me that the DOMAIN is already in use for that
non-existent user! Sure! Because the first NIC grabbed it with the DHCPSTRT
during the boot run, I betcha, since I can't set that NIC up without it too.

Is this where the puppy is being cheated out of a bone?

--> Sleep well; OS/2's still awake! ;)
