It depends on what OS's you want to run and what OS is on your host PC -- tell
us a bit more about that...

That's ESX Server, muy dollars, probably the best Server Virtualization
platform at the moment. (for PC class servers) I believe it's a dedicated Linux
kernel...

There's also a GSX server that runs on top of an existing OS, that's not quite
as expensive, but still expensive and VMWare's main revenue stream is support
dollars...

That could be, I never used the beta and instead run Virtual PC and Virtual
Server by Microsoft, and VMWare Workstation and Player.

Both Virtual PC and Virtual Server are free too, and both can be installed on
either a Windows Server or XP. (I think Virtual PC will also install on Win2000
Pro.)  It's suggested that Virtual Server only be installed on XP for
development and testing, not for production.

A new version of Virtual PC (2007) will come out (also free) about the same
time as Vista that will support 64-bit hosts. (Virtual Server already does, and
a SP is in beta that supports hardware VT)

Yeah, me, ask away. <g>   I am a Microsoft MVP for Virtual Machine products,
but I also run VMWare stuff, and anything else I can get my hands on!

Really, what you want to do and what hardware/OS you have to do it on makes
more difference than wanting to aim at any particular product.  I have at least
3 virtualization products on every PC I use, so there's no reason you have to
pick one product and stick with only it, even if your needs/wants change.
