On average, 22% of all MacBook and MacBook Pro computers in the survey required
repair. We found 27% of the original Core Duo laptops were repaired by Apple,
while 6.3% of the new Core 2 laptops have already needed repair.

Our initial survey identified a serious logic board quality problem with the
15" MacBook Pro, especially the two 1.83 GHz models (January and May). This
problem appears to have been solved in later models, which show a far lower
replacement rate (even allowing for the fact that Core Duo MacBook Pros have
existed three times longer than the Core 2 Duo versions).

We also see a cluster of hard drive replacements in the original Black MacBook
and the new Core 2 white MacBook. Many readers report they replaced the drives
not because of a problem, but because they wanted more space and Apple charged
more for "Configure to Order" upgrades than it cost them to buy a drive from a
third party. We did not attempt to "correct" the data to allow for this.

Early 15" MacBook Pros suffered from faulty batteries, part of a larger problem
with batteries supplied to a number of computer manufacturers by Sony. (Apple
instituted an exchange program for certain affected batteries.) Some original
MacBooks also appear to have battery issues, as well.

The problems with some early MacBook Pro power bricks appear to have been
resolved; there are very few reports of problems with power adapters or the
MagSafe connector in recent Core Duo and Core 2 models.

Consistent with anecdotal reports, the 17" MacBook Pro proved to be the most
repair-free model in our survey, in both its original and newer Core 2
versions. This survey did not attempt to gather qualitative data like our
initial survey, so we don't know if the 17" still suffers from uneven display
brightness, but we did note that the rate of display replacement is half that
of the original's.

Most telling are what previous problems are no longer common. Apple's newer
logic boards appear to have resolved most of the early defects of the MacBook
and MacBook Pro. Display, battery, case, keyboard and optical drive replacement
rates have all dropped.
