   If you mean data CDs as a means of distributing software then yes it =
may have seemed quick but that is perspective.  For others it was a slow = wait
until CDs were common enough to rely upon.  It is similar today = with DVDs. 
Everyone you know may have a DVD-ROM drive but they are not = common enough to
rely on for some software.  You can still buy new PCs = with a CD-R only and
even if the upgrade price is only $5 it is enough = to keep it from being
automatic.  I was speaking to someone on Friday = who told me that he is unable
to ship his product on DVD only and it = targets what might be perceived as a
high end segment.

   I don't think the value in HDTV vs. SD or even ATSC vs. NTSC for the =
consumer is the same as that of software distribution on CD.  From the =
distribution side CDs were a blessing.  They were much cheaper to = produce
than the floppy disks they replaced and provided an order of = magnitude
greater capacity allowing more value to be included at no = additional per-unit
cost.

   In regard to HDTV, for me I have become accustomed to HD and dislike =
watching something in SD.  This isn't quite accurate as I believe that I =
distinguish more between full frame 16:9 vs. 4:3 than I do between HD = and SD.
 I notice both but have less dislike for a widescreen SD DVD = than I do for a
4:3 SD TV show.

   I'm all for a mandate that all new TVs must support ATSC and phasing =
out of NTSC.  I would have liked the ATSC mandate to occured a while = ago.  I
have a year old HDTV that does not include an ATSC decoder.  I = was OK with it
because it is used with satelite TV which has a separate = decoder anyway.  The
replacement which came out a few months later does = have ATSC.
