Yes it was about the cost of hardware vs the cost of software and why =
hardware has gotten so much cheaper while software has remained = expensive.

Geo.

This discussion was about cost, specifically how the cost of labor =
has increased even while technology has allowed the cost of hardware =
production such as RAM and hard disks to decrease dramatically. If your =
intent was to twist this into a discussion of the economics of pricing =
strategies than you should have said so. I think the ideas you have = posted
on the subject are silly and naive.

Yes, it took a while before I realized you had distracted me away =
from the selling price into this cost justification line of bullshit. = Nobody
prices software based on what it costs to produce.

    Geo.

Nonsense, you put up this big argument about how software =
pricing is justified by development costs, so explain the cost = difference
between Windows NTworkstation and Windows NT server. It's the = same frellin
code except for a few registry entries and a handful of = utilities, remember
those versions? Server cost about 8x what = workstation cost at the time and
advanced server was like 3x the cost of = server. Compare XP home to XP pro,
they actually had to do MORE work to = create the Home version from the pro
version yet it costs less. Why does = a 5 user version of server cost less than
a 25 user version, did it cost = more to develop, are there fewer man years in
the 5 user version?

Software pricing has nothing to do with costs, it is priced like =
used cars, whatever they can sucker people into paying is the price.

        Geo.
"Rich" <@> wrote in message news:42b3ae07@w3.nls.net...
New software is not less expensive. Let's say you simply =
wanted to create a product that was competitive with what existed 10 = years
ago instead of competitive with today's software. It will cost = more than it
did to produce 10 years ago because for as many man years = as it takes to
produce those man years cost more today. It won't take = you fewer man years
to produce.
