Probably a better idea as there are other boards that could work with them if
you ever needed to replace the motherboard for whatever good reason.

Sounds great.  I did run across some PC66 that might work but never
investigated the voltages.  Seems to me that they made both 5V and 3.3V sticks
back when they were 'must haves' so you'd probably want to make sure.  Offhand
the prices seemed comparable with the 72-pin ones.

Right.  I found 256M to be the sweet spot when it comes to compiling etc.
without the need for swap.  Can get away with less but what the heck eh?  :-)

You need a heave_ho function for those.  I have yet to see a program requiring
windows worth it's weight in bytes.  Anyone who says otherwise should give
their head a shake methinks.

The stuff I saw in Florida was crucial but did notice a claim about having
kingston.  I just noticed what they had up front and center and the price.  My
best guess is whatever you decide to do is indeed doable and probably available
somewhere at the right price.
