INdeed.  LEt's put it on a more basic level.

YOu work for me.  YOu're doing a good job and I"m quite
happy with your performance.  But, for reasons which have
nothing to do with your performance in any way I"m having
trouble making the nut.  I've been able to find funding to
get me over the hump and keep my business afloat, keeping
you in a job.  eNd of the year comes, and I tell you that
your performance merits a bonus.  BUt, there's just one
problem.

I don't have the money to pay out bonuses.  I'm borrowing
heavily to make operating expenses, including paying your
regular salary.  THat means I"m going to need to service
this debt, but if everybody performs as they have been, and
if some pieces fall into place just right we're going to get through this, over
this hump and pay down that debt over
time.  IF all goes according to my careful planning I"ll be
able to pay out bonuses next year, and maybe even factor
some raises into the equation.  BUt, first I"ve got to get
through the next few months, making operating expenses and
servicing this debt I incurred just to stay in business.

tHe folks being bailed out made some very poor investment
decisions.  NOw they want to pay bonuses.  seems to me
priorities are in the wrong place.

I've heard for years union folks saying that they accepted
the company's demand of wage and benefit concessions so the
company can keep its doors open and keep the union members
gainfully employed.  IF you can ask this of union people why then is it that
executives should be immune?
tO be honest, I"m tightening my belt a bunch to just keep
myself afloat and get through the next few months.  IF all
works as planned I"ll be better off a couple years down the
road however.  IF I can understand this then some guy with
an MBA and a huge salary should be grasping the concept as
well.  wHen you're in the welfare line is not the time to
think about heading for the five star restaurant and
ordering a porterhouse when you leave.
