Ärende: The Malady Lingers On?
==============================
Hi, James! Recently you wrote in a message to Ardith Hinton:

JB> The baggage they carry may have nothing to do with
JB> common sense, but more painful to abandon than a digit.

AH> That's why we devote so much bandwidth in this echo
AH> to what makes people tick.

JB> So *that's* why I always seem to leave scratching my head. <G>

Not to worry. You often leave me scratching my head too.... :-)

AH> it's much better for my own health to recognize why they're
AH> doing it than to attack them or to crawl under a rock. But
AH> I may have to shovel some of my own muck first.... ;-)

JB> Hey... My yard is as messy as most, but at least I put an
JB> effort forward.

There's an example of the sort of response I find confusing. Are you
expanding on my metaphor about "shovelling muck", or did you take it literally?
Either way I think you've got the general idea. But then I'm not sure how your
account of Richard Branson's TV show fits into the picture... unless maybe it's
intended to demonstrate how people get their comeuppance, sooner or later. :-)

JB> I probably should check the eyes. They can show something
JB> on the retinas I suspect?

Probably. Diagnostic methods have improved a lot in recent years. I
also know from experience that problems with vision can sneak up on a person...
especially if they're approaching middle age & their vision has been stable for
a long time. That was what happened to me when Nora was in treatment. I found
it increasingly difficult to concentrate on reading books, and I attributed the
problem to the amount of bandwidth taken up by making sure Nora got her meds on
time & whatnot. I'm sure that was part of it... other oncology parents told me
the same thing later on. But there was another, more easily correctible factor
which became evident when I analyzed my own errors in reading. I was confusing
letters such as "m" and "n", "a" and "e". The optometrist confirmed that while
my mind was otherwise engaged I'd been gradually succumbing to presbyopia. :-)

JB> I have been rather dizzy lately, but just
JB> suspected the low BP, and hyperventilating.

Well... again, there may be more than one reason. I have low BP too.
What seems to help, in my case, is moving slowly when I'm getting out of bed or
something & breathing from the diaphragm as if I were playing clarinet.... :-)

[re the coffee pot incident]
JB> Just as I'm sluffing that off to regular idiocy, three
JB> or four more things happen to remind me how I had pushed
JB> it just days earlier. It has been rather amusing, but
JB> disheartening to be sure. Just as I finished stubbing my
JB> toe on something I walk by every day, I cut myself some
JB> slack.

Yes, I think it is important to cut yourself some slack. People have
"senior moments" from the time they're in their twenties, apparently, but don't
generally notice such episodes until they start happening more often. Being in
pain or otherwise subject to extreme stress can make them more obvious.... :-)
