Ärende: A Different Drummer...

JB> Wind in the hair, seat of the pants...

AH> Definitely SP! Don't worry, it gets
 AH> easier with practice.... ;-)

They were different degrees of the same mindset, so I think I'm looking to
complicate the system, where the system tries to simplify how a person
approaches obstacles. <?>

I'm not positive, but I believe your accounts might have contradicted your
earlier statements. It's likely not large, but if you neglect a "n't" on "can",
then I'm back to square one more confused than ever. (Now I know how others
feel trying to read me.) Chances are also good, that I'm just not getting it.

JB> I'm sure you noticed my confusion with the A-type
 JB> personality.

AH> I was somewhat baffled by your
AH> explanation initially. The theory of
AH> temperament isn't exactly the same, but I'm
AH> beginning to see how the two might be

Maybe, the net result of a learning style is likely to produce a personality
type, but it has dawned on me to differentiate the two. My misunderstanding,
how you were equating the letter designation, I automatically attached the
personality type letter designation, and suspected you were introducing me to
an extension, or a subset to that.

AH> complementary. To paraphrase a poem by Rudyard
AH> Kipling... "If you can fill the unforgiving
AH> minute with sixty seconds' worth of distance
AH> run, you may well be an SJ!" You've alluded to
AH> the folks who scurry around with a coffee cup in
AH> one hand & a cell phone in the other (as I
AH> have). If they're doing it because they enjoy
AH> the adrenaline rush and/or if they appear to be
AH> making plans on the spur of the moment they're
AH> probably not SJ. Workaholic perfectionists are
AH> the classic "heart attack" personalities... the
AH> type I've seen referred to as type "A". They're
AH> more likely to spend long hours at a desk job &
AH> avoid using cell phones. "B" people go with the

A-type would avoid cell phones?

AH> flow & take time to smell the flowers, which I
AH> imagine comes more easily to those with a strong
AH> "perception" component. When Nora was a baby I
AH> cracked up the New Mothers' Group by saying "I'm
AH> learning to be a Type 'B' person". As a
AH> teacher, I was ruled by the clock & the
AH> calendar. As a parent, however, I soon had to
AH> learn to function on Toddler Time.... :-)

L!!! Ya, I've made a conscious effort to become more "A", but my mistake was to
do so, while firmly denying I was in pain. Now that I know what's what, I'm
*still* running myself raged. (I know, you expected no less from me. B-)

 JB> Likewise, it's a sliding scale, isn't it?

AH> In the sense that it's a continuum,
AH> yes. I exaggerate SJ & SP in my descriptions
AH> for educational purposes. Some people really
AH> are that extreme... others are more of a
AH> mixture. I'll catch myself doing something, for
AH> example, and say "Hmm... that's my SJ. Is that
AH> what I want to do, or is it something I think I
AH> should do because my parents or my teachers said
AH> so?" If I'm aware of what reasoning style I'm
AH> using I can change mental gears as necessary....
 AH> :-)

My notes migrated to another room, so I'll just go with what I know. I was
getting the impression that a sensory invoked person would only be a subset of
a judgment, not either. Now, I take it this is not the case?

JB> The soft spoken fella, said very quietly, "No, I can not
JB> climb with him any more. I don't want to talk about it."

AH> Perhaps the "cowboy" lacked a sense of
AH> responsibility, which is most often associated
AH> with "J" people. IMHO a certain amount of it is

See, my intuition is telling me to think the opposite. This one, is so
ingrained that a "judge" is one pinnacle of a person, beyond reproach.

AH> desirable... especially in a hiking or climbing
AH> companion. Where it may be irritating to a "P"
AH> person is where it is experienced as "the
 AH> tyranny of the shoulds".

I'm sure that exact thing happened in my mother's car today. I was getting
nervous, because there were too many "should have"s. As she pulled up to pick
me up, the driver behind her was verbally expressing his upset too, so I should
have (There it is again! |-) driven my own car.

 AH> The difference between "J" and "P"
AH> appears to be the factor which is most likely to
AH> lead to conflict. And while almost everyone has
AH> some intuitive ability, it does complicate the
AH> picture. Three quarters of the population are
AH> predominantly SJ or SP... so they're easier for
AH> the beginner to identify. :-)

Talk down to me, why don't you. <L>

 AH> Kerouac, the "beatnik" poet??

That's what I meant to say. <Sheepish>

AH> According to this theory the majority of such
AH> people were SP's... and so are a lot of
AH> professional entertainers. If you don't know
AH> where your next meal is coming from you may be
 AH> an SP.... :-)))

I read this, as I stuffed my face... It comes from Taco Bell, of course. <G>

Point taken though, as I have leftover chicken in the fridge, but the rest of
the meal could go any number of ways.

JB> And then there's the `fusion' bagpipe player, or one

AH> That's very much the sort of thing
AH> Peter Schickele does with his PDQ Bach comedy

Right, but my thrust was to how a person can be traditional, yet fuse it with a
modern bent.

AH> routines. In one of these, the bagpipe player
AH> emits a pedal tone. I'd been wondering how he
AH> did it. Then one of my band students offered to
AH> let me use his chanter... and told me to blow
AH> gently. Voila! I got the same note on the
AH> first try. I was thrilled because I'd found the
AH> answer to my question. My student was upset
 AH> because I hadn't followed the correct
 AH> procedure.... :-))

Huh? "Pedal tone" "Correct procedure"
