===========================
Hi, James! Recently you wrote in a message to Ardith Hinton:

AH> In the short term, it's a good thing you wake up when
AH> you can't breathe. In the long term, however, sleep
AH> apnea can put a lot of stress on the heart & lead to
AH> other problems. Have you discussed this with your
AH> doctor? :-)

JB> Sort-a... <EG>

JB> He knows about my oversleeping, and he knows - just
JB> the month before - about my weight gain. He's smart
JB> enough to connect the dots, I'm sure. Just for you,
JB> I'll point it out next time.

Whether you do it for yourself or for me, I think it would be wise
to give him enough dots to connect! I wasn't surprised to hear you'd been
sleeping a lot because pain can be exhausting, as can reorganizing
communications between the brain & the nerves. Sleep apnea can also be
exhausting because one's normal sleep cycles are interrupted. If the doctor
doesn't realize you have difficulty breathing he may attribute your
"oversleeping" to other causes, as I did.

Similarly, your weight gain could be attributed to a lack of
physical activity. This is a common problem for people who are unable to walk
very well. Combined with an unusual thirst and/or a craving for salt, however,
it may be an indication of something else. The doctor needs to know what side
effects you're experiencing from the drugs you're taking... and he needs to
know whether you're sweating heavily in bed, as people with sleep apnea often
do. Maybe a change in medication would help. Maybe it wouldn't. You won't
know if you don't tell him what's happening in your life. Now make a list of
all the things you've told me about recently & show it to him before you let
too much more time go by.... :-)

JB> I've always said, my heart will give out, as a result
JB> from the pain, and maybe this is just another nail in
JB> the coffin. <?>

Well... maybe. If you don't pay serious attention to the sleep
apnea you could have a stroke or something, however, and go on for another
fifty years yet. Seems to me you have enough medical problems already without
that.... :-/

AH> If there's a shutoff valve within easy reach between
AH> us & the main water supply, any mistakes probably
AH> won't flood the house in an eyeblink. Whenever I
AH> think they might I call the plumber.... :-))

JB> Where's the fun in *that?* <L>

Okay, so you have more SP tendencies than I do... [chuckle].

JB> Yes, I may have to swallow my pride, and take the
JB> tiller in for a carburator rebuild, but it didn't
JB> stop me from trying to fix it myself. I also have
JB> a pretty smart fella on combustion engines just
JB> down the street, so I'll see if I can bribe him first.

Makes sense to me. From what little I know of carburetors they
won't blow up in your face if you don't have everything adjusted quite
right.... :-))

AH> IMHO we get all the salt we need from various ingredients
AH> which have already been made for us. :-)

JB> I've had to start adding salt to my diet, because of the
JB> excessive sweating my meds make me do. Water alone will
JB> not quench my thirst.

Yes, certain drugs do interfere with the balance of sodium & water
in the body. Sometimes one doesn't have much choice, e.g. when they're used in
the treatment of asthma & leukemia. The best option may be to go with the
lesser of two evils. But your situation is different. Talk to your doctor
about it. :-)
