The problem remains with Word 2007 (as far as I can tell).  I just haven't dug
into options enough to see if there is a way to stop that behavior.  I usually
apply a manual correction and from then on Word behaves itself.

Something else annoying about Word 2007 is the paragraph spacing it uses for
the Normal style.  It almost appears as if Word is applying double line
spacing.  By opening the Format menu and checking the paragraph spacing I found
that it was applying 10 points between lines.  I've been too lazy to figure out
how to permanently turn that off.  Instead I reset it to zero points.

There are too many things about Word which are automatic and assumed.  I need
to dig in and turn most of the automatic settings off.
