The easy work around (and one which I employ) is to limit the download to a
certain number of messages on the first offering.   Limit to say, 50.   That
will set the bookmark.  Afterward you can reset to unlimited or whatever.  But
unless you know that, the first download can be overwhelming for the initial
attempt.
